The Fool: a wildcard character

Postby GimmeYerGold » February 14th, 2016, 3:04 am

I wanted to round out my custom characters with a Hero for players who like a gamble.

The fool is mutable from quest to quest. The Body/Mind roll up averages to about 10 points, but could be more, or less. The forced reroll can turn the odds, or create a blunder. This is all par for the course when you play the fool! :D

Overall I think this character might be fun for a person who wants the randomness, and they can ham it up.

All in all the re-roll seems very powerful. Most times he'll have the chance to improve his roll. The exception being a perfect roll e.g. 4/4 skulls in an attack with a battleaxe.
I like it a lot, but it's not so much of a double edged sword as you seem to make it out to be.

+ they're going to stick most of the points onto BP. You could rule that the BP and MP have to be evenly split and if it's an odd number they can decide where to put the extra one, or it just goes on BP because that's always going to be what you do anyway.

For the reroll you could roll a combat dice after every roll to determine what has to be rerolled, for standard dice they could reroll the highest on a black shield, neither on a white shield and the lowest on a skull. That would make him/her quite fast.

You could rule that after rolling for MP/BP, the highest die reult has to be assigned to MP.
Goblin-King is right about the re-roll.

Yea that is nice. It creates variance in the BP/MP instead of a max 1 point difference. |_P

Or reduce the differences a bit by giving 3/3 in advance and rolling with 2d6?
Well, this character is more for persons who like randomness. :)

Whereas, the forced reroll is good in most cases.

Idea for the forced re-roll:

...
...
...

One second...

...
...

GLARAGAGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHHGHGALALALAKALAGH!

...

Ah, here it is:
re-roll only a black shield, a 1, and a 6

Or:
With a d6 roll, roll one cambat die along. On a walrus you gotta re-roll the higher result, on a white shield the lower result.
With a combat dice roll, roll 1 d6 along. On a 6 you gotta re-roll a skull, on a 1 a shield if applicable.

I don't like the second idea that much myself cause it seems overly fiddly. Yet, it could be fun.

Yes that's the correct word here.

GLARAGAGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHHGHGALALALAKALAGH!

:D

What about:

You have to reroll one die for every black shield, but NOT the Black shield die.

that way you have to decide for something actually useful sometimes. :)

I like this idea, too!

Can you run me through an example of it in practice?

Would it work like this?:

I roll a 1, a 6 and a 3.

I must assign the 6 to Mind Points since it is the greatest, but the remaining 1 and 3 can be assigned to Body Points, making a 4 Body Points/6 Mind Points character.

Question: If this rule is the case, do you think it's assumed the "any time your roll any number of dice" forced reroll rule would come into play during character generation, and the player could reroll the 1 if they wished?

Q2: Would the requirement of assigning the highest roll to Mind Points help offset the boon of subsequent forced rerolls?

note: in a previous draft of this character, his special ability was that once per round, the Fool could reroll any one die, even a die not belonging to him. I still like the idea, but saw how it might be hard to keep track of, since it could act as an interrupt, unless it depleted Mind Points or the like.
