I'm learning highlighting!

Highlighting sucks :( Learn-to-Paint kit gives you terrible color mixes.

I've been working on these: https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/paint%20kit. The first one is where my pictures on the last page came from.

The first kit is really informative and not too tough, the second one is pissing me off though. Still, you get a good selection of paints, some brushes, and minis for pretty cheap. Enough to get started, anyway. Also, the color samples shown on the website have been replaced with actual ½oz. bottles, making it a very good deal if you're just starting out.

Kit #2 is done! Behold my failure to grasp the nuances of highlights!

I gave up on all the little stringy bits on this guy.

The worst part of taking pictures is seeing all the imperfections in HD. Touch up time.

Use some ink wash to tighten up the details. Do you know how to make magic wash?

Cheating, basically.

You "wash" miniatures' details with it, like you would when applying an ink. Citadel's now-famous washes were reverse-engineered from magic wash. The inks they sold up until a few years ago were pretty crap.

Start by buying this: http://www.rocketreviews.com/image-futu ... -47978.jpg

I have bought it at Wal-Mart and Home Depot.

You must then put some kind of ink in it. You can use black permanent markers, ink pens, etc. You need to add enough dye that the solution is no longer transparent. You want to make a 2:1 Brown and Black tone.

Think of using it like you're inking a pencil drawing. You apply it to details with a brush; ideally after your base-coat, but before you commit to highlights. Brush away any bubbles. It will leave a glossy finish, so you'll need to matte seal it after. You can still highlight over it, well enough.

Don't saturate with it too much. Just apply it conservatively until you reach a point that you think looks right.

That does sound an awful cheaterpantsish. Does it do anything that a regular ink wash doesn't?

Regular ink wash is a solution of ink and water. Magic wash uses floor-wax instead of the water. It has less viscosity, meaning greater surface friction. Ink washes are for adding color saturation to create contrast and tone. Magic wash adds linearity to create a color threshold.
