HeroQuest with kids

My daughter was recently asking for it. Sadly she has no time today.

My 9 yr old daughter and 7 yr old son have been playing on and off for the last few months. We've gotten to the last quest of Keller's Keep so far. Their interest comes and goes, and we only ever get one quest in per sitting as their attention usually tapers off near the end of the first quest. The hardest part is getting them to not fight with each other and focus on the game!

We started at age 6 and 12. Some of the rules were a little confusing (imagine a 6-7 year old GMing) but we muddled through and had fun.

The box we had recommended age "10 to adult."


The remake edition has this "14+" on the new box which is just plain silly. They're just saying that to convince teenagers and grown ups that it's "okay to buy this for yourself."). You don't have to glue and paint anything and its not a "collectible" meant to be kept in the box forever so this is just marketing. I sincerely doubt there will be any "mature content" in the new quest books and the rules aren't changing really so that has to be it.

You could just as easily argue that getting teens to stay off their phones* for a few hours and focus on the game would be equally challenging to keeping the kiddos interested. Didn't mean to turn that into an old man rant (tm) this is a fun game once you learn it and I am excited for you all introducing it to a new generation. I've still got a little more time for my niece and nephew.



* this should be considered cheating since you can look up quest maps!

I'm tempted to pull out my Heroica sets (I have most of them, and doubles of one or two) and pick up a couple baseplates (baseplates are expensive) and see what all I need to maybe rescue Sir Ragnar or something.

I'm still a fan of this ancient game, with which, my hobby for board games once began. HeroQuest is totally suitable for playing with children. Much better than Descent, which will be more serious and more complicated. In HeroQuest, you don't need to calculate and verify so much, everything is simpler and more concise - you sit calmly after an exhausting working day with your children and enjoy. My child is attending a preschool in Crystal River, FL. It would be great if they played HeroQuest with the children too. Despite the moral obsolescence of the game, it still has a certain unique charm for me, mixed with nostalgia.

What does "moral obsolescence" mean, does that mean that monster-bashing is no longer morally acceptable, perhaps we should introduce a new hero that tries to give the monsters a hug and offers them counselling, might have a short life expectancy, maybe that is the intention of the now-legendary Orc Bard?

Seems to be the thread for old man rants (tm) but seriously turning off Wi-Fi when playing this or any other board game is essential

I mentioned before that age 8 is probably the earliest age to start but my now 11 year old has just reminded me that he started to play aged 6 - that said he did start with playing the Barbarian so being simple and having a limited reading capacity were probably in character!

I want this. Where can I get it? Or a similar set with normal Lego minis?

You'd make it yourself from you standard legos... I never saw those extra tiny minifigures before.

That is part of the Lego Heroica line. There were 5-6 individual boxed games that came with 2-4 heroes and monsters. Even the Dice was made up of a lego block with flat panels for the numbers. They released other games that had different micro-figs, Lava Dragon, a Pirate game, Harry Potter, LoTR.... etc. They died out unfortunately, but you can find the micro-figs on Bricklink and other lego sites.
