But, isn't a warlock just a male witch? Having a female warlock makes no sense whatsoever.

There are (as far as I know) no clear definition of witch, wizard, sorcerer, warlock. They all just vaguely mean "someone who use some sort of magic".
In modern media however, it's become pretty common that warlocks are magic users who gain their powers from some sort of deal with a demon.
That's why the new HQ warlock has that crystal corruption going on I guess. Because of forbidden powers.

I dunno, just stinks of PC-ness.

Warlock
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to navigationJump to search
For other uses, see Warlock (disambiguation).
A warlock is a male practitioner of witchcraft.[1]

Etymology and terminology
The most commonly accepted etymology derives warlock from the Old English wǣrloga meaning "oathbreaker" or "deceiver"[2] and was given special application to the devil (c.1000).[3] In early modern Scots, the word came to be used as the male equivalent of witch (which can be male or female, but has historically been used predominantly for females).[4][5][6] The association to the term "oathbreaker", "liar", or "traitor" was possibly associated with witches and wizards in Scotland as they were seen as someone who made a pact with Auld Hornie (the devil) and thus had betrayed the Christian faith and broke their baptismal vows.[7] From this use, the word passed into Romantic literature and ultimately 20th-century popular culture. A derivation from the Old Norse varð-lokkur, "caller of spirits", has also been suggested,[8][9][10] but the OED considers this implausible due to the extreme rarity of the Norse word and because forms without hard -k, which are consistent with the Old English etymology (“traitor”), are attested earlier than forms with a -k.[11]

History
Although most victims of the witch trials in early modern Scotland were women, some men were executed as warlocks.[12][13][14]

In his day, John Napier was often perceived as a warlock or magician for his interest in divination and the occult, though his establishment position likely kept him from being prosecuted.

I suspect this is less an issue of being politically correct, and more of the influence of Hasbro's connection with Dungeons & Dragons and that game's Warlock class, which is a magic user that gets their magic from a deal made with a powerful otherworldly entity of some sort. Instead of being a politically correct thing, it's simply that the word has been repurposed, and now that repurposing is being spread.

If HeroQuest is successful and goes to retail, I wouldn't put it past them to put out crossover products bringing other Dungeons & Dragons things into the HeroQuest game either. A Forgotten Realms based expansion featuring a Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, and Paladin perhaps? Or other things along those lines. With there being a Forgotten Realms set coming out for Magic: the Gathering, I wouldn't put this past them. It could even serve to draw interest from the massive D&D player base to the smaller HeroQuest community.

Don't get me wrong, I do really like D&D, but I also really like HeroQuest. I don't really want HeroQuest and D&D mixed. If they start bringing things from D&D into HeroQuest, I might just ignore it.

There are times when I feel like playing D&D, there are other times I feel like playing HeroQuest. These two worlds feel different from each other, if they're mixed, I don't want to risk polluting the feel of one world with the other.

I agree that Heroquest should feel unique in its own way as much as possible. All fantasy based games will of curse have lits of overlap, but I don't want this to turn into a "Starter's DnD" anymore than it's already seen as being that. It's true that this game was kind of an entry point for DnD, but it does have its own feel to it

I'd like it to remain as much Heroquest as possible while adding new things but not becoming a Lite DnD expansion so to speak

as previously discussed in this thread: Wizard, Mage, Warlock, Sorceror... what's the difference? :D

Goblin-King wrote:This is not an exact science and the names have all pretty much been used interchangeably throughout time

Archmage - This is a rank. An Archmage is above the other mages in some sort of organisation eg. Mages' Guild
High Mage - - Again, this is a rank in some sort of organisation, rather than a special type of mage
Magic-User - Any of these - Literally a person who use magic
Spellcaster - Any of these - A person who is able to cast spells. It's a catch all term.

Also for females:
Hag - This can be the old ugly woman who spits in her hand and cast a curse on you
Witch - Woman who gets her powers from Satan or other demons. Woman who is skilled in nature medicine. An (typically) evil female wizard

But really... it all just depends on the setting. People can rationalize and use logic all they want, but in the end words and language doesn't always follow any particular logic.
These are all mostly words made up in ages past when people weren't super stoked about sharp definitions on stuff.
Unless you want accuracy in relation to a particular work, you can do pretty much whatever you want.

up front - some people feel there is not much difference in the terms at all,
and so they use them interchangeably. I have used wizard, mage, and magic
user to equal the same thing sometimes.

Archmage - Very powerful magic user, typically wizard.
Conjurour - magic user who 85% of the time uses magic to conjure things. Typically wizard, but could be others
Enchanter - As conjurer, but one who enchants things.
High Mage - As Archmage, but typically a mage, I suppose.
Mage - Typically a wizard who spends more time creating spells
Magicien - Magician? This would be one who uses more tricks than real magic
Magic-User - Any of these
Sorcerer - Their magic comes from an innate source, instead of from studying spells
Sorceror - Same as sorcerer
Spellcaster - Any of these
Warlock - A magic user whose power comes from a pact with demon or devil, typically. Might be a wizard of sorcerer.
Wizard - Magic comes from studying spells.

Also for females:
Hag - not usually used for a magic user - swamp monster
Sorceress - female sorcerer - sometimes used for female wizard
Witch - female warlock, though not always an evil pact - sometimes refers to a sorcerer who almost knows a lot about nature
-----------and natural herbs and plants and their uses

Also regarding D&D crossing over into HeroQuest...
Don't forget Legacy of Sorasil had beholders! It's all coming full circle!
I, for one, welcome our new Hasbro overlords!

Yeah, when you look at something like Advanced Hero Quest, it does have a lot more D&D style elements in it. Things that we all take for granted here are altered... dice other than six sided, modular dungeons, round slot-based miniatures (that are expected to be painted, that is all white/gray)...

And Legacy of Sorasil, which was a video game only, sequel to the PC adaptation of Heroquest (Game System + ROTWL, and KK in some versions if memory serves) had D&D elements like "Beholders" for example.

So it wouldn't be the first time. HeroQuest should be its own thing as much as possible, even if it has some things in common with other games. D&D already tried to copy HeroQuest's success back in the day with "Dragonstrike" (and failed to achieve lasting success... the only thing now is people cannibalizing the sets for extra minis to use in HQ, or making jokes about the goofy VHS tape it came with).

And yeah, if you're going to do a male and female version of every class (that is identical except for chest/leg density and facial hair) but then do a traditionally male one as female only, that seems a bit odd. But the explanation that it's a D&D tie in makes sense. They want this to be a gateway drug into more money, when to many of us, HQ is its own thing, and doesn't need to be a stepping stone or training wheels for something else.

HeroQuest doesn't need to lead into Battlemasters that needs to lead into Warhammer fantasy/quest/40K. Of course they don't get paid for homebrews, they want our $$$ purchasing new content in whatever form, from them.
