Quest 7 item: Unidentifiable purple liquid--how did it go 4U

My heroes finally used the purple drank in quest 11 when facing the Gargoyle. Unfortunately the Gargoyle also was stone and not activated, and it was just the barbarian separated from his group significantly by 5 turns or so. He already had 6 defend dice, so figure it was not super useful on him compared to say, the wizard using it last minute to cheat death.

Anyone have an epic story of how their group used this liquid?

I had my group identify it between quests. I'd expect them to go to town and rest up, buy new gear, etc ... so they could just as well have visited an Alchemist who could have told them what it is.

The Wizard of one of my groups used it in the very same quest.
When the heroes came to the room with the Gargoyle, he was hoping to maybe gain back a spell from drinking it, but after he turned to stone the 3 other heroes had to deal with the Gargoyle.
Conveniently the spell wore off right after they found Wardoz. So nothing really special happened.

In my other group, we're up to Quest 9, the Elf currently has the Potion of Mystery but has yet to use it.
