But if the Heroes were in the middle of the big final fight and were clearly going to fail and all die, then a quick extrication from the situation would be preferable so that they can live to fight another day?

In your system they don't regain BP or spells so they would be up s*** creek.

Wouldn't that be helpful? In Against the Ogre Hoard the heroes have to run back to the surface on the last quest... So if the Ring of Return were to work in such a way they could cut that final quest.
However, due to the working, I think it only takes them back to the beginning of each quest, whether connected or not the Ring of Return resets at the beginning of each quest. The only time I see this being a substantial issue is with Dark Company...

Yes it would be helpful to escape but the Heroes will discover the Ring of Return only later, in 1992 in a US location!
Wondering if the ring can also help the Heroes to escape from the Soulless Wizard's room in Mirror-Maze by Goblin-King?

I have a doubt: do you allow the Ring of Return to be used "only once" or "only once per quest"?

I would imagine only once, like the Elixir of Life

That's how it reads. One use and it's gone. Quite topical for me as I've just found a ring of return in Eschaton. I think it's there to allow a safe escape from the collapsing spire, but I ran for it and made it out on foot to save it for another day.

Good question as to how far back it takes you when in a series of quests. As it is used to effectively save the Heroes and get them out quickly, I would say it's totally out of the entire quest, but they will have then failed. Shame on them!
