As I see it there is a distinction between body armors (Chain, plate and Borin's) and additional armor (Helmet and shield).
The body armors:
Quoting the cards:
Chain Mail: Chain mail armour allows you to roll three combat dice in defence.
Plate armour: Plate armour allows you to roll four combat dice in defence, BUT... bla bla
Borin's Armour: Borin's Armour allows you to roll four combat dice in defence.
The helmet and shield gives you one extra combat die in defence.

Why is this even confusing?
Can we all agree that it's allowed to combine the chain mail with both a shield and a helmet? Why not Borin's Armor then?
Body armors grant a set defence which can be increased by other armor types.
I would also like to disregard the helmet on the picture. I mean The shield doesn't prevent you from equipping a weapon just because he is holding a sword on the drawing.

It renders the wearer near-invincible, and then they still 7 more base quests to get through and then tons and tons of quest packs... It just seems like WHATEVER the creators' intent, it might be for the best to restrict it a bit.
