Who is the Stone Hunter

In the EU/UK rules there is a quest called The Stone Hunter. This is the same as The Lost Wizard in the yankee book and Karlen is called Wardoz (it seems there's not much difference except Wardoz is worth 66 gold less than Karlen for some reason).

The chaos warriors are made out of stone, but who is the Stone Hunter? Is it Karlen/Wardoz? Does it make sense to anyone?

I tried to make sense of it but I don't think there is any!
Don't expect any answer from anyone other than "it doesn't make any sense at all!".

Yeah...that makes no sense to me at all. Hmmm....I find it so very interesting that a company like MB,
with a game that seems to have been so popular in its time (and still is) would put so little effort into
certain portions of the publishing.

Reading it through you can't really make any sense.
I have however always assumed (out of the blue without any basis in anything) that Karlen is the Stone Hunter, pursuing knowledge of stone magic.
Or that he kinda was a stone wizard before he turned to chaos.

But yeah, it is kinda random...

He also needs to be presented in a different context. That little room there makes him a one turn death.

So, bigger room, couple guards, falling block trap in the front of the model, earth spells, here we go.

Karlen is the Stone Hunter!! It is his nickname because he was in search (and found it) of a magic stone and experimenting with it, but the magic stone combined with the chaos powers sucked his vital energy and generated the 4 Stone Chaos Warriors.
Originally they were normal stone statues adorning his hall but the life energy of Karlen was split and converged in the 4 statues bringing them to life and turning Karlen into a zombie.
In the US version Karlen also melted some gold and mixed the liquid gold with some magic ingredients plus a bit of dust scratched from the magical stone to create the misteryous potion that can turn a hero into a stone statue.
Fortunately for that hero he was a bit greedy and didn't use all of the coins but only 56 pieces or the effect could be stronger and irreversible, instead it only lasts 5 turns with no more negative effects for the hero. This explains while in the US version you will only find 144 gold coins instead of 200 like in the EU version.

It is not necessary to give him the Stone Spells, they are just defensive spells. What is the use for Karlen of Heal Body or Pass through Rock? Also he has 0 mind points because he is a zombie and not a wizard anymore so he now has less than the required 4 body points to be a magic-user.

Pass Through Rock would make for an interesting chase. Heal Body would work on a Stone Chaos Warrior. Rock Skin is already obvious.

In the Dutch version, the text for the EW mentions that Karlen is a soulless zombie, consumed by Chaos magic. As such, I doubt he can use any magic at all and by all means is simply just that: a soulless zombie.
