I also felt, as the name suggests, that this quest required a time limit of sorts. But time for the players isn't necessarily the same as time for the in game characters.

I agree, but consider it is a dungeon, maybe if they encounter a couple of goblin in the starting room they will not pay the right attention to the guide while he escape.

wallydubbs wrote:So I changed this quest a bit into another rescue mission: so i changed the intro, added furniture, put the stairwell in the room just north of where the heroes would normally start (thus moving the 3 orcs into the room with 3 doors), put the Alchemist and his bench in the room......

Maybe you can post it too? I am curious to see it.

I would, but apparently I'm not a high enough level yet to post attachments.

So I've been wanting to post my version of A Race Against Time for a while, unfortunately I can't get my map creator working on the PC; however since I had the game out earlier I figured I'd post pictures instead if anyone's curious.
As I didn't care much for the idea of the heroes abandoned with no memory on how to get back to the stairwell and I prefer the Elixir of Life being associated with Alchemical lore, I changed the opening passage to:
Quest 9 A Race Against Time
En route to a mysterious castle, you stop at a tavern seeking directions. While there you receive work that a local Alchemist on the outskirts of town is in danger. He had spotted a tribe of orcs descending from the hills and sent a raven requesting assistance from any group of heroes willing to help. He has locked himself in his lab and is offering a reward.

The map layout is practically the same except the heroes start in the stairwell, which is in a different room. The place where the stairwell originally was is where they find the Alchemist. They have 20 turns to find him before a chaos warrior funds him and kills him.
