Hi, just for info: You can check in this post what my own difficulty model calculator says about the main topic of this old thread.

There you can take a quantitative idea of the difficulty differences between European edition of Hero Quest and American one for Game System, Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord questpacks.

As someone who has recently begun going through the original quests again, I can tell you that the answer to your question is, hardly. It is hardly difficult.

I got to Zargon for a friend on his 1st time playing. We started with Quest 1. He made it through the quest by exploring every room, he searched for treasure several times, and everyone survived. The upcoming missions are going to be even easier. I'm looking into ways to make them a little more interesting.

While more interesting for a single, experienced player/gamer, it also is an advantage to play all four Heroes perfectly coordinated. If The Trial didn't produce the challenge you're looking for and the easy win wasn't chalked up to lucky dice, one quick fix from the EU rules could be to restrict the Heroes to just three.

Good point. The documents always warn that playing with less than four heroes increases difficulty (a few quests might even break if you play them solo, although it doesn't say you can't use the other heroes as NPCs where required). But good point, who says you either play them with 1 hero or 4 (but not 2 or 3).
