Personally, I love the idea of using this as a pseudo-trap. Some action causes it to come to
life. Perhaps, as suggested, a certain character has to touch it or do something for it to
come to life.
This will throw the heroes off. Perhaps there are a couple of quests that require the same action,
or different actions. Then they won't know what will set it off. HAHAHAHA!

My bit comes from when I playtested one of my custom adventures, where the gargoyle was actually a puzzle object and not a monster. But i didn't say so, and the heroes had flashbacks from an official quest with a stone gargoyle that sprung to life and assaulted them, so they freaked out six ways from sunday and took FOREVER getting around to solving the puzzle.

Part of this was because the puzzle involved giving the gargoyle back its jawbone and using the jaw as a lever. Which, y'know, involves putting your hand in the thing's mouth.

Man! This is like being stuck in one of those old point and click adventure games (before the Internet was a thing).
Click like a mad man on every pixel on the screen hoping you'd missed a pixel sized item.
Using every item on every item.
Asking all your friends, except they are stuck at the same spot.
That ONE friend who'd completed the game, telling you it's obvious once you get it!
