Very awesome finds. Although this edition doesn't change the rules from the NA base, it provides some very interesting assets (even if back in the day many kids would have rather had the plastic instead of cardboard). Was it done as a cost saving measure? Because you'd think they wouldn't get away from the GamesWorkShop IP with this since the illustrations are still of Citadel creations and Warhammer Fantasy inspired lore is unchanged.

So this set came with many "door" style gray plastic bases to account for all those character standees, right? How many were in the box? You'd need at least four for the heroes and for whatever is the usual number of monsters encountered at a time.

So two of the furniture are completely cardboard but the rest are still cardboard/plastic hybrid? This was a surprise to me as I heard incorrectly that they were all 100% cardboard. The cardboard pieces are interesting as they suggest another "paint guide" for those wondering how maybe the designers envisioned each piece looking (granted, even then there are multiple interpretations of things, see the Chaos Warrior and Dwarf in every classic edition).

Re: HeroQuest Brazilian Edition Official Rules. Brazil! 1993

Postby Kurgan » Thursday May 2nd, 2024 6:00pm

Brazil! HeroQuest! Estrela! 1993! Portugese! I keep coming back to this...

I have now seen the bases and they are crammed!

Saw a sale for it on Ebay, but it was like $777, probably double the price it should have been, including a lot of custom stuff it could have left out. Still, interesting stuff. I'd much rather own the Japanese edition, but this is definitely a piece of history (and a crying shame if legal issues are holding it back, but here's hoping those get resolved soon!).

I also thought that the official remake character sheet bore a passing resemblance to the Brazilian one (granted, the battle axes were there in the NA edition too):

With the impending release of HeroQuest: First Light (November? January? February?) it brings to mind a comparison with that edition to this one... while furniture are now converted to flat tiles in the Avalon Hill version, there are once again cardboard standees for monsters (but not heroes) other than the new Dragon boss (with stats that are more powerful than Joe's dragon from Crypt of Perpetual Darkness). The characters still have the same image on both sides ("front" of the character) albeit with a black background instead of white, and round transparent plastic bases instead of smaller versions of the door bases. The board is thinner than the 2021/2022 release (not just cardboard folded in half; FL board is a hex-fold) and has a new board design layout on the back (with an Arena, similar to Against the Ogre Horde remake).

It makes me wonder if Hasbro is close to making a deal (with Estrella?) to release HeroQuest in the nation of Brazil and perhaps in the Portuguese language as they once did...? It certainly makes you think! Very little work would be needed to bring a nostalgic release to Brazil in the next year I would think.

AH shot down rumors that they were going to convert all of the existing expansions into cardboard standee versions (and we know First Light, like the Brazilian release contains all of the GS elements and thus is theoretically compatible with all official retail expansions).

I question whether we can say that the Dragon Brasil "published quests" and addon material was official. Were these liscensed with Milton Bradley (Hasbro) or through Estrella? Or were these just the equivalent of fan content (like the "Inn of Chaos" published in Adventures Unlimited and several others that are from the era of HQ but unofficial, as revised and posted on Phoenix's page)?

I would consider the material from official publications and licensed material to be "official" (Marvel Winter Special, Dave Morris HeroQuest novels, White Dwarf Magazine as it is the official magazine of GamesWorkShop and were contributed by GWS employees). Magazines and newsletters were how fan-made quests were circulated before widespread internet access after all.

First Light isn't out yet in the US (apart from a few youtube influencers who got early versions)... it's expected Jan 12-15th in the US. It'll be interesting to see any comparison videos for the two versions.

wonder if this decision (besides obvious cost cutting and product size) is throwback/reference to DragonQuest (tsr 1992) - which had board, cards, hero miniatures (in both pewter and cheap red plastic) with cardboard standees monsters and doors. introductory tabletop rpg game system that was versatile and could be expanded, bridging to more advanced rpg experience

I would like to record here at least the two clear errata I found in this version of the game, which are the following ones:

- Rulebook, Armory: Longsword ("Espada Longa") allow rolling 2 Attack Dice instead of 3 like in NA version of the game.
- Character Boards: The Dwarf board says he starts with a Dagger ("Adaga") like the Wizard, however he attacks with 2 Attack Dice. The Dwarf should start with a Shortsword ("Espada curta") like in NA version of the game.

Have you detected other errata?
