Any Hero could always buy Daggers to throw at 25 gold coins a pop. Even if a Hero owns a Crossbow, Daggers can be purchased for the Wizard. Also, tool kits can be purchased for the non-Dwarf Heroes. If you want, you could also allow a Hero to buy a longsword/shield combo and a battleaxe to suit the combat needs of the moment.
Beyond some of the negative ways to reduce gold coins already mentioned:
If you're willing to use more of the NA rules, the Chaos spell Rust can relieve Heroes of swords and helmets. Using the NA KK, a Rust-casting Fimir appears in Quest 4, The Dwarven Forge. That's possibly 3 pieces of equipment that will need replacing. Gragor in Quest 6, The Great Citadel, also can cast Rust.
In both of the EU and NA RotWL Quests, The Court of the Witch Lord, the Heroes may break thier weapons by attacking the Orc statues.
The NA RotWL Quest 2, The Cold Halls, there is a tomb trap that can destroy Borin's Armor and Orc's Bane. Quest 6 removes the gold coins and gems for all 4 Heroes, not just from 2 as in the EU (British) version.
WoM features a more powerful version of Rust. MotM has a quicksand trap that requires 2 items to be discarded, and FH uses Ice Gremlins to steal equipment.
