This situation came up in our last quest and I had the elf move to the closest open square as there was a cupboard on the other side of the wall he passed through. The Pass Through Rock spell card states that the spellcaster is "trapped forever" if he ends his turn in the solid rock (i.e. the shaded areas on the quest map). It does not say to take damage if you end in a space occupied by furniture or a monster. I look at this the same way as a wandering monster who cannot appear adjascent to the hero who searched for treasure; simply move them to the closest availible space. I think this is keeping the spirit of the game rules without worrying too much about the actual physical aspects.

I tell them when they see that they're passing thru rock, and I have them stop when they're in a room that has furniture - I place it,a nd let them continue their move.

That's what I do, too.
There's no reason not to, because the hero sees what he walking up to/thorugh.

I'm surprised there are so many different ways to interpret this spell. The key phrase for me is on the card: if the caster ends his movement in solid rock, he is trapped forever.

The way I interpret this is:
1) the caster rolls red dice
2) the caster casts the spell
3) the caster makes his full movement
4) if the caster has opted to pass through rock into a previously unrevealed room or corridor that is solid rock, he only finds out about this now, and dies.
4b) if the caster has opted to pass through rock into a previously unrevealed room or corridor and that room or corridor is NOT solid rock, only after the caster has made his movement will Zargon/Morcar set out the furniture and monsters.
4b2) if the caster has landed on a square that is occupied by a monster or furniture, he is bumped to the next unoccupied square (referring back to to the card, it sets up previsions only about ending movement in solid rock).

I'm surprised to learn that there are so many people who apparently either set up the room with monsters and furniture once the Wizard/Elf enters it... and the allow the caster to finish his movement, or tell the caster whether it is solid rock or not. This seems to go completely against the intent of the card--as I'm interpreting it--which sets it up as a bit of a gamble for the caster.

Its called "Pass Through Rock" for a reason--you can only pass through rock. You can't pass through furniture or monsters, and nowhere is it indicated that you can. The spell specifically states that you can only move through walls. If the poor Hero to use the spell gets cut off by a cupboard he's toast. That's the risk in using the spell.

I think that's way too harsh. Imagine visiting the heroes mother and telling her that her son was killed during a quest....by a cupboard!
