This is exactly what I have wanted to see. I'd like to learn programming for this but time is short.

I am a programmer and I could do that. Also, with Unity development studio you can grab pictures and add them as 3D objects, do smooth animations, rendering and there are so many tutorials to learn you how to do it even if you are not a programmer.

The problems are:
You don't have 3D heroes.
You don't have the rights to do it.
It needs a lot of time and zero profit.

I am more interested to put a 2D board and add some tokens for heroes and monsters and make it as a multiplayer browser game, but I don't have a free server to keep the data for the game.

I may have misunderstood the post I commented on. What I would like is a board game/video game, similar to what Lurchbrick had made except for the following:
1) Cross platform. I can run his game on my Mac through WINE but it is so slooooooowwwwww.
2) I want to make one that will have the additional quest packs as well as be able to incorporate home made ones.
3) Can accommodate homebrew rules and to some extent, cards for new equipment/spells/treasure, etc.

I don't want to make a 3D HeroQuest game. I like it as a board game. I would just like to see something out there that would allow someone to play HQ if they don't have someone to play with on a regular basis. Also, this is something I'd like to do for Battle Masters as well.

1) Unity can do that. You can export the same program to any platform (mac, android, xbox, playstation, etc).
2) If you use the xmls files from Heroscribe (it’s just a text file with a specific format with the directions to where to put the images) you can use Heroscribe as the map maker. You just have to make the program to “understand” the format of Heroscribe and put everything in the right place.
3) If you do a “smart” program you could upload the data you want and it will use them. For example, if it has a folder called spells and you upload an image in there and an xml (with the data), then the next time it starts will find that spell. Of course the format of the xml should be well written if you want advanced things. To make it simple, if the program will read the xml and find the key “room area” it has to be able to understand it and find all the targets of the room. You may also add more keys like “room area and the heroes” and add the function to understand that too. It’s not impossible, it just needs time.

If you like programming just try it. Don’t buy books or anything else. Use youtube and watch tutorials, it’s the fastest way. And if you want anything ask the forums or me if you want something for coding (I don’t have spent too much time on unity. I’ve just learned the basics and want to get deeper when I find the time).

I'd like to but right now there's no time. I work and I'm going to school for two degrees. My schooling requires that I have some programming so I'll have to wait until I get to that portion of my degree to take the classes.

Yeah, I doubt I could handle the programming. Can't Hasboro just repackage it as a game to resell the original boxed set (which they should revise and resell too...)?

From what I've seen so far, there are two NES prototypes of HeroQuest. They're conversions of the PC game, but a few differences like the "battle" animations look different (but as before are very basic). There are far fewer colors as you might expect. The NTSC ("US") version is mostly incomplete, while the PAL ("European") version is mostly complete, supposedly. I only played it a little bit, but from what I could tell (playing the PAL version) you can only play with 1-2 Heroes. Either you and a friend each control 1, you go solo with 1 or with 2. You get the 14 Quests (with the Trial) and the ROTWL Quests. It appears to be based upon the UK Version, like the PC version before it. I remember in the PC version there were no restrictions on what type of armor and weapons you could carry (so the Wizard could use a battle axe with a shield while wearing plate armor and a helmet), unless I was playing a modified version. ;) I'd have to test it further... but it's really a curiosity more than anything. You're better off playing the real thing (of course), using your tabletop simulator or one of the other adaptations.

Edit: Since this post I've taken a more in-depth look at the HeroQuest PC game (DOS) and correct some things... see here

A gameboy version? Interesting. I should update what I said above... the NES prototypes do cover Kellar's Keep, which the other (released) editions of HeroQuest don't (they only do game system and Return of the Witch Lord). But yeah, I'd much rather play the real thing or Isometric hero quest. Vassal is interesting but a little less visually interesting to me. The option to play online with others is neat but I like having Zargon be a human player and being able to easily insert human players.

Tabletop Simulator's efforts were visually interesting but getting the program to work was a pain in the butt, and after switching to windows 10 I haven't been able to get it even to boot up, much less load the necessary mods, so that method of play is off the table for me for now.

So we'll be getting another video game, in a sense, with the HQ companion app for the Remake. Further details are presumably forthcoming.

HI, I think all of you already know HeroQuest Revived, a -quite- new videogame for PC and Android you can download (and contribute if you want) here.

Current version still has several bugs but it is fully playable, I recommend have a look to it. You can play full basic game quests (American Rules). Compared with other HQ fanmade video games, in my opinion, its bests are Exploring, Spells casting and Traps dissactivation. Overall, I think this video game simulates pretty well the board game mechanics and aesthetic. You can send comments to the developer for future versions of the game (I did it).

This guy also has a You Tube channel where you can watch some videos about his videogame here. >>>> TRAILER HERE !!

Unfortunately, I have never played this game. As far as I know, the gameplay exactly adheres to the rules of the desktop version. Everyone throws virtual dice. My friends tried to persuade me to play it. However, I prefer dynamic games more. My favorite one is Diablo. Now I play it only online and sometimes buy weapons on <url removed>. by the way, the third part of the game disappointed me. I passed the company in 20 hours. I used only the “corpse blow up” skill. The last two acts were boring. Mobs didn’t make any damage. It was a complete disappointment for me. (especially infuriated portals)
