Recently, our reknown member lestodante, sent me a scan of a brief review of HeroQuest board game published in June 1994 at the Italian videogames magazine "Console Mania".

I was quite curious about it and started to investigate a bit more. Fortunately, thanks to the website archive.org, I could check the content of other issues of this Italian magazine and the results were quite useful for the interests of this thread.

I discovered that this monthly videogames magazine also included back in the day a small section about board games, so I found there at least three more articles (THREE!!!) mentioning HeroQuest and Battle Masters board games. Here are all these articles:

- Console Mania Magazine, issue 17, March 1993 (Italian)
1993_ConsoleMania_Magazine_Issue_17_[I totally agree]_EXTRACT.pdf

- Console Mania Magazine, issue 18, April 1993 (Italian)
1993_ConsoleMania_Magazine_Issue_18_[I totally agree]_EXTRACT.pdf

- Console Mania Magazine, issue 21, July/August 1993 (Italian)
1993_ConsoleMania_Magazine_Issue_21_[I totally agree]_EXTRACT.pdf

- Console Mania Magazine, issue 31, June 1994 (Italian) -> This is the one that lestodante sent me, not shown in archive.org.
1994_ConsoleMania_Magazine_Issue_31_[I totally agree]_EXTRACT.pdf

Notice that maybe could exist other articles in other issues but I couldn't check them.

Hi, here you have some pages extracted from the UK's magazine GamesMan, issue 1 (released in year 1991, probably during June month), where can be found reviews of the era about the classic HeroQuest board game and video game.

- GamesMan Magazine, issue 1, 1991 (English)
1991_GamesMan_Magazine_Issue_1_[ENG]_EXTRACT_LR.pdf

P.D.: A digital extract of this magazine already existed in the Fans Community since years thanks to the Italian Forum of HeroQuest (http://www.heroquestforum.it), however I scanned again these pages because there was one of them missing (page 25) in the existing pdf, but here you now have all of them available.

Our Inn's member ivanv has been so kind and have sent me a set of scans from 1991's Italian MB Catalogue (Booklet DIN-A5 format) to be posted on this thread for everyone.

The file includes the catalogue front and back covers, first intro page and three middle pages with adverts about HeroQuest, Kellar's Keep, Return of the Witch Lord and Space Crusade (StarQuest). It is interesting to observe that those three last boxes are identified as "NEW" in this 1991's catalogue, which fits with what I already mentioned on this previous post about the Italian 1990's similar MB catalogue, so I start to think it was true that Italian KK and ROTWL expansions were not released before 1991. Well, probably Italian members could clarify it, hopefully.

- MB Catalogue Booklet DIN-A5 Italy 1991 (Italian) - EXTRACT
MB_Catalogue_Booklet_DIN-A5_Italy_1991_[I totally agree]_EXTRACT_LR.pdf

Finally I would like to point that we already have scans of this kind of Italian catalogues from 1990, 1991 and 1993, but we still don't have on this thread the 1992 one, so if anyone has it (if it existed) and want to share some scans would be great to complete the collection :-)

Hi, here you have some pages extracted from the France's magazine Jeux & Strategie, issue 7 (released on April 1990), where can be found a one-page review of classic HeroQuest board game. More issues of this magazine may be found by free in this website.

- Jeux & Strategie Magazine, issue 7, 1990 (French)
1990_Jeux_&_Strategie_Magazine_Issue_7_[FRE]_EXTRACT.pdf

Jeux & Strategie French magazine was a board games magazine of the era quite specialized in classic games like Chess or Damas (they included a lot of stuff about them) and wargames. The magazine was funded in the 80s, and they also included stuff about commercial board games of the era from several brands like MB, GW, Parker, etc., however I was quite surprised to see that issues 1 & 2 recommended a lot of board games for Noël campaign during Christmas 1989 and HeroQuest was not mentioned anywhere. Maybe in France the HeroQuest board game was not released until well started 1990? I guess no, but please could any French fan around here confirm it? thanks!

P.D.: Be patient, Casus Belli French magazine articles are being already prepared to be also added on this thread... :-)

HispaZargon wrote:Another one with similar lack of information, here is from The Netherlands the cover of a MB mini catalogue in Dutch, probably from 1990 but not sure, which full content is also unknown for me but our HeroQuest appears in the front page and here is also available some info about it. Again, if anybody could provide some information about its full content it would be great!!

MB_Catalogue_Netherlands_[DUT]_COVER.jpg

MB_Catalogue_Netherlands_[DUT]_EXTRACT.jpg

- MB Mini Catalogue Netherlands (Dutch) - Release year 1990, probably.

Thanks again to our Inn's member ivanv, we can now solve this incognita opened two years ago: he has confirmed that the reference number of this Dutch MB Games mini-catalogue is NL 4.90 132.001.890, so it corresponds to year 1990 and he has also confirmed me that the only HQ product shown in the catalogue was the HeroQuest basic game box.

ivanv also sent me the following better scans of part of the catalogue cover and HeroQuest entry page:

MB_Catalogue_Netherlands_NL_4-90_[DUT]_EXTRACT.jpg

Additionally, ivanv has also kindly sent me some good scans of ANOTHER MB mini-catalogue from The Netherlands, which is the following one. In this case, Space Crusade (StarQuest) is the game shown in the cover, but HeroQuest, KK and ROTWL expansions are also included inside so, although the reference number of this catalogue is in this case unknown, it seems it corresponds to year 1991:

MB_Catalogue_Netherlands_1991_[DUT]_EXTRACT.jpg

Just a final curiosity, if you compare both catalogues, you can check that HeroQuest gaming age was increased from +9 to +12 years at some moment between both catalogues.

Interesting. "12 and up" to me implies "complicated game" (or else some safety issue, like making you cut sprues and glue, etc). The 14+ is pretty common and we know it's for safety testing reasons (legal) vs. complexity.

As I advanced in this previous post, I have been investigating in the old issues of French legendary magazine Casus Belli. This magazine covered a lot of games back in the day, not only board games, also roleplaying games and wargames. Thanks to website archive.org I could access to many numbers of this magazine.

I discovered different articles with mentions to HeroQuest, Space Crusade and Battle Masters. Here you have the extracted pages with them, some include really interesting material:

- Casus Belli Magazine, issue 56, March/April 1990 (French) - Just the very first mention seen in Casus Belli magazine to HeroQuest board game, on page 14.
1990_CasusBelli_Magazine_Issue_56_[FRE]_EXTRACT.pdf

- Casus Belli Magazine, issue 57, May/June 1990 (French) - Reviews of HeroQuest and Advanced Heroquest board games. This one was not available in archive.org, but I scanned the pages for you here.
1990_CasusBelli_Magazine_Issue_57_[FRE]_EXTRACT.pdf

- Casus Belli Magazine, issue 63, May/June 1991 (French) - Brief article introducing Space Crusade board game.
1991_CasusBelli_Magazine_Issue_63_[FRE]_EXTRACT.pdf

- Casus Belli Magazine, issue 66, November/December 1991 (French) - Review of Space Crusade, including a new Mission to be played.
1991_CasusBelli_Magazine_Issue_66_[FRE]_EXTRACT.pdf

- Casus Belli Magazine, issue 72, November/December 1992 (French) - Review of Battle Masters, including new Rules and a new Scenery to be played, something really rare to find for this game. Two extra new Missions are included for Space Crusade board game.
1992_CasusBelli_Magazine_Issue_72_[FRE]_EXTRACT.pdf

Notice that maybe could exist other articles in other issues but I did my best in finding all of them.

Hi again. Today I would like to share with you a quite special addon: HeroQuest competition pages from the 1989's Fantasy Roleplaying Magazine G.M..

It is a document well known by the Fans Community, because a scanned copy has been uploaded since many years ago in the download sections of great websites HeroScribe and HeroQuest italian Forum, and probably others. However, unfortunatelly such ancient file had the magazine's index/credits page missing and the cover page borders were not correctly scanned due to the anormal size of the magazine (a bit larger than a Din-A4), so I decided to scan those pages again for you to fix forever those minor topics:

- G.M. Magazine, Volume 2, issue 3, November 1989 (English) - HeroQuest Competition with Steve Baker!
1989_GM_Magazine_Vol_2_Issue_3_[ENG]_EXTRACT_LR.pdf

I have always seen the pages contained in this magazine quite fascinating from HeroQuest collecting rarities standpoint. They basically contain a contest for magazine's readers which consist in playing a pre-defined quest described in the magazine in which the Heroes must escape from a dungeon crowded of monsters, and send a narrative description about the result of the game to Stephen Baker himself at his Milton Bradley's office! Amazing... another interesting point is the competition could be also participated by players who didn't own a copy of the HeroQuest game.

The twelve most interesting narratives for non-owners of the game won a HeroQuest game box, and the twenty best detailed account of the Heroes next move for owners of the game won a HeroQuest poster (who knows how such poster looked like, I am so interested how it was of course, if anybody knows something, please share it!).

But... there was something rare for me in the quest map shown in the magazine. I think it has a design mistake since it is unclear the exact starting location of each Hero. I think they are the numbererd circles, and they should match with their order in the table below the map or with the number of Body Points of each Hero as shown in the table below the map, but it is not explained anywhere in the contest rules, so just speculations from my side. Other option is perhaps their location was allowed to be decided by the players? who knows...

Happy Holidays to all Inn's Members!

Here is my modest Christmas gift for all you. I am glad to share here a scanned full copy of the MB German catalogue D/4-90 from year 1990. We already new about this catalogue according to the pictures I already found in BGG which I posted here, however we didn't have pictures of the rest of the catalogue until now.

Well, after more than two years searching, better late than never, so I finally found a physical copy of the catalogue, here you have it:

- MB Mini Catalogue Germany D/4.90 (German).
MB_Catalogue_Germany_D-4-90_[GER]_v2_LR.pdf

Nevertheless, the most interesting info contained into this catalogue are the pictures of the Space Crusade prototype (aka Star Quest), as far as I know probably the only document where those pictures can be found, so I tried to scan them with the best resolution posible as shown in the following picture:

MB_Catalogue_Germany_D-4-90_[GER]_v2_EXTRACT.JPG

Quite interesting to also observe in the pictures the UK prototype of Return of the Witch Lord expansion, with different box and cardboard sheet design compared with the final retail version. This also goes in line with the already known UK prototype of Kellar's Keep expansion which appear in some other catalogues even in the back of some EU expansion boxes. Nice to see here the posible inclusion of extra regular doors in their two configurations (opened and closed).

Hi, here is a new one-page advertisement about Hero Quest that I have scanned for you.

This advertisement page was included in Mean Machines Magazine, issue 20 released in UK in 1992, and it is so different to any other one of such era because it shows in first plane some HeroQuest miniatures, especially the Gargoyle, which in my opinion makes it quite cool.

Additionally it shows an interesting offer to buy a T-Shirt showing an Orc... I found this T-Shirt not too much time ago in an asian online shop called "nana-mall2022" per 25 dollars, I bought one but unfortunatelly it never arrived, probably it was a fake advert... but believe me that the pictures shown in the shop website entry looked real and showed the same Orc, much more closer than seen in this magazine page, that's the reason why I tried luck in such risky enterprise.
