I got an email from Hasbro about it. It definitely had a positive tone to it, with a don’t miss your chance feel as well.

In truth it’s just a lame last-ditch attempt to get over half of the required backers in just a couple of days.

3,782. So they'll break 4,000 if they're lucky, only 50% of the base goal.

4,087 Backers with just 11 hours to go. They broke the halfway mark, but still too little too late I'm afraid.

Amalgamash made a video on the situation as well.

Re: HeroScape Age of Annihilation (remake): failed

Postby Kurgan » Wednesday November 16th, 2022 1:25am

The final tally was 4,353 backers. The project failed to be funded, so refunds are anticipated.

I got to see most of the final hours of the campaign unfold in the Avalon Hill discord. A very passionate community. I wish them well... |_P

I don't think I could justify my hunch, and I certainly do not have any inside info, however, I wouldn't be too surprised if this project got another chance down the road. Likely with a different strategy if it did.

We know they (Hasbro/ AH) are paying attention to the HS fan base, so I'd imagine they have been able to gather some useful data on what that community is looking for at this point. That would seem a valuable tool to have for any restructure for a would be future campaign.

Time will tell I suppose, but it's easier for me to be cavalier about that as HS wasn't on my list of must have retro game resurrections. For that I have Thunder Road to look forward to... And more HQ.

Yeah for me it would be Space Crusade and Battlemasters, even Advanced HeroQuest on my dream list of re-releases. It would seem they're leaving a lot of money on the table (even if it wasn't exactly what they wanted in the timeframe they asked for) by not harnessing the enthusiasm and loyalty of the HS community (for the moment) so I agree with you.

But how long are we talking here? 5-10 years?

I'd love to hear some kind of official statement, in depth interview or after-action from the Avalon Hill guys on this. Worst case scenario they just never mention it again and wild speculation will run rampant in the community anyway.

At the end of the day the fans get their refunds, all they did was get excited everyone only to be disappointed after barely two months of anticipation and waiting. HeroScape fans are still holding the torch that was lit 18 years ago...

Press release: (from Avalon Hill)

To all the fans of HeroScape,

As of the deadline for the HeroScape: Age of Annihilation, Vanguard Edition HasLab project, we are short of the goal needed to start production on this wonderful game. No doubt you are disappointed in the results. We are too. The anticipation for this project among the Avalon Hill staff was great – we spent months preparing for the campaign, and once launched we worked hard to gain the support of every single backer who pledged.

And it didn’t go without notice that you did the same. So many of you worked hard to help spread the word of our campaign. You offered us your honest feedback, let us know where we may have missed the mark in some places and where we were succeeding. Your involvement in this project was incredible, and we feel lucky to have found such an amazing community of folks who all share the love of this unique and thrilling skirmish battle game. The passion we felt from you was truly an inspiration that kept pushing us to improve the campaign as best we could. So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Thank you so much for sharing that passion with us.

We also want to extend a huge thank you to the HeroScapers who came aboard to help us create this project. Your work on this game was absolutely unbelievable, and we know how hard it was for you to keep your involvement a secret in those early days! Sincerely, this wouldn’t have been the same without you and we appreciate everything you brought to the table.

So, with that being said, no doubt the big question on everyone’s mind is…

What’s next for HeroScape?

Our unfortunate answer is… nothing. As we said during the campaign if this project doesn’t meet its goal, we won’t be able to produce Age of Annihilation. That has not changed. HeroScape as a project will be shelved, and there are no current plans to attempt a resurrection at this time. The Avalon Hill team will refocus our efforts on the exciting games we currently have coming soon, such as the next HeroQuest Game System expansion, Mage of the Mirror, or the upcoming Yawning Portal D&D strategy board game.

What we did take away from this campaign was a great deal of learning. And for that, we have you to thank. We hope you remain as passionate, as devoted, and as vocal with all our future endeavors so that we create to the best of our abilities the games you love.

:(

Not a surprising response, though clearly a solid one in terms of acknowledging community passion for the game. Which is really good, and reaffirms what we've been slowly seeing, which is that AH in particular, is invested in trying to get things "Right" and recognize the community.

It's also good that the release didn't mince words or inspire false hope about the future of HS. There was no "Shelved for now" or "We'll see what the future brings", types of language, for example. Though they did say "at this time", which may be semantic, but I read a little differently. That type of transparency I really appreciate. Personally, I think it was responsible to not offer ambiguity about any possible future projects related to HS.

The sort of unfortunate confirmation of some of my previously expressed concerns, comes in the reference to HeroQuest at the end...

"The Avalon Hill team will refocus our efforts on the exciting games we currently have coming soon, such as the next HeroQuest Game System expansion, Mage of the Mirror, or the upcoming Yawning Portal D&D strategy board game."

I'm sure it's meant to bolster our confidence that their other licenses will not be impacted by the failure of the HS HasLab project to perform, however, knowing that it's a relatively small (if passionate) team per AH's own various communications, it leaves me wondering what might have happened had the HS project done really well. If they are "Refocusing" that could imply that they were stretching themselves thin with multiple projects.

It'd be great to think that they'll use the momentum to maybe get more team attention on HeroQuest going forward, but it doesn't assuage my previous concerns that HQ could have taken a backseat to the new shiny thing.

Regardless, I remain saddened for those who were really looking forward to more HeroScape. Sorry folks.

Yeah I think it's probably small comfort to a serious HS fan to say "well don't worry you can always buy more HeroQuest and D&D you know." Yeah but they wanted HeroScape, that was their game, right? There's no rivalry between the two franchises nor should there be.

I wasn't worried that by promoting HS that HeroQuest was going to suffer somehow, but I was a little concerned that maybe if HS failed spectacularly that it might inspire reluctance with regard to the future of HQ. Then again one could see it the opposite way, that HQ has already established itself and they can go back to a proven franchise brand, as if the HS thing was a sign that somehow interest in fantasy board games with the Hasbro label have fallen out of fashion and are unprofitable now (doubt it!).

The deliberate ambiguity and such surrounding the Guardian Knights apology (much more so than any comments tangentially related to complaints about the exclusivity of the Mythic tier materials) certain will continue to draw speculation and perhaps they really wanted to curb that. A lot of people were hopeful and commenting (myself included) that they could "find a way" to release HS anyway, even though the campaign failed, this kind of put a hard stop on that wishful hope. It might be another 5 or 10 years before they'd try to bring this game back, perhaps in an entirely different way.
