I think the closet thing I can think of is what is used on certain mass produced religious icons:

"Mounted on wood with non-glare satin lamination... UV protective vinyl coating."

I've seen a similar process used on game boards (game tables with swappable "leaves" with different games on them) and some wooden children's learning toys. Mounted on really thin wood.

Probably not what Kurgan's talking about, but Foamex possibly has some value in making durable gaming stuff. American brand similar to Foamex is Sintra.

Yeah anything sturdy and durable but also lightweight and inexpensive. These don't have to be fine china or gemstones.
