Tower Rex Modular Game Board

Postby BStewart80 » Wednesday February 10th, 2021 11:34am

Guys, I am thinking of requesting Tower Rex to create a HeroQuest modular game board from their materials. They have assured me that it may be somewhat costly and time consuming on their end. I asked them originally in December, but they were very busy with the holidays and thought it might be best to approach this at another time. I'm thinking now.

However, before I ask them, take a look at their products and let me know if you think this would be worth pursuing and possibly something you might want to purchase yourselves. In other words, I am hoping to encourage them to create this in their hopes that by doing so will yield potential buyers other than just my self.

Or let me know your thoughts if you think this may be not such a good idea. Just curious.

If I worked in a woodshop, I'd probably try something like this, but...

My personal opinion... and I know it won't be popular because "3d dungeons" are so popular here... is that it's not worth it. Sure, 3D dungeons are objectively "cool," whether they are made of resin, actual stone, plastic, or that balsa wood looking material they're using in those pics.

BUT... Hero Quest is designed to be much more versatile. Look at the board.. there's no architecture, other than the suggestion of some walls that need to be able to move. Sure, having a full 3d set with removable parts may serve your purpose, but for me... if all you want is a "modular" version of the Hero Quest board, maybe with larger squares, there is a very easy and cheap way to do it...

Print out the HQ board (high quality scans are easy enough to find if you don't want to do it yourself), and print out the sections in color (laser printer for best quality). Get yourself some glue-sticks and stick them to chipboard. Once dry, cut out the pieces. You can lay them end to end or make them interlocking if you want. You can play with the size and the quantity of pieces all you want. Modular HQ dungeons accomplished! And while you may lose a piece under the coach on occasion (or the dog chews it up), well just print another one! When you're done playing you can toss all the pieces into a box like a jigsaw puzzle and store it away easily for next time. Big heavy dungeon sculptures like this take up a lot more room, I guess if you are willing to dedicate a permanent space to it, more power to you.

A 3D dungeon just looks awesome. It will impress people who come to visit you, and you can take awesome pics of it to share online which will impress people. But for actual gameplay, in the spirit and style of Hero Quest? No. If you're just looking for something HQ to spend your money on, I can think of all kinds of better uses (minis, paints, dice, books, etc).

If you want something pretty like they are selling though, its your money, you decide. ;) :2cents:

I enjoy the 3D boards, but they don’t seem practical. My biggest issue with them is special room overlays. If I want an overlay to cover more than 1 room, that doesn’t work too well with walls in the way. 1 room can be lifted out and replaced, but more than 1 is a little more challenging. Then, you also get to the issue of needing all the room overlays to be 3D to match as well.

You have convinced me no to go this route. Thank you both. I have enjoyed the Loke Battle Mats to mix up the maps and they have worked beautifully. I'll continue to use them along with the 3-d furniture and walls. Kindest regards.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bashing 3D boards in general. I don’t have an issue with 3D boards that are a passion project. If you need an overlay room, you can just make it cause you enjoy making it. Just buying it seems difficult and expensive for all the additions you would need.
