Larger Playing Boards (or Magnetic?)

Postby Redav » April 4th, 2015, 6:24 am

For those who have printed larger boards, have you mounted it onto something? Thick card, thin wood, laminated paper or just as is? Do people who play modular use a backing grid to help keep things square or do you just let it go?

My current board is laminated & rolled. I'm planning a second, mounted board. Greyboard with hinges made of bookbinding tape works wonders!

I've glued mine on thick grey cardboard. About 3mm thick. Double sided and laminated, with a fold down the center. There's a how-to on the blog.

Yup, I think I've read that but I'll go back and have another look at it.

I know that chaoticprime (is this complete or have you done anything more to it?) and Sydcomebak were looking at magnetic game boards, has anything come of those? Has anyone else had any luck with something like this?

I printed mine at ~30mm and mounted it to 2 Elmer's Foam Boards (black) with 3M spray adhesive. Then covered it with a wide roll of transparent contact paper and secured the covering to the back with Gorilla tape. I created the hinge down the middle with Gorilla tape (Black) by taping the two halves together only on the back side, then folding in half and placing a narrow strip of tape on the inside seam. The foam board can develop divots if you put your elbows on it, but not really noticeable, and we don't do that anymore. It's been a great board for the past 9 months or so.

I am about 2/3rds of the way through my new magnetic modular board. I will post some pics tomorrow.

I downloaded the really high quality 4cm squares board. Used photoshop and cut out each room and resiZed them all to 3cm squares. Added a .5cm wall around each room.

Printed off the rooms and corridors on thick photo paper

Cut out metal sheeting to the size of the rooms.

Stuck the printouts to the metal plate.

Adhesive contacted the print to the metal plate after it was stuck down.

Glued a non stick rubber backing to the underside of the metal plate.

Printed off all the wall, pit trap, stair and any other tiles that are normally placed on the game board with the exception of room tiles. Stuck them to magnetic sheeting and contacted over it.

So now I have modular rubber backed metal game room tiles.
Magnetic game tiles
And I will also be either sticking magnetic strip or earth magnets to the bases of all my miniatures and furniture.

Advantages?
Will last forever !
Won't have to carry around a full size board !
Dice won't knock things over
Dungeon is revealed as explored.

Recycled my huge 20 year old metal sign that blew down in a huge storm 2 weeks ago by cutting it up for hero quest !

Don't you have problems with aligning rooms next to corridors because of corners and your 0.5 cm walls?

Knightkrawler,

you are correct, When I added the walls I did think about that but figured since I was going to go double corridors, I would be able to fudge it and make it work anyway... big mistake, so I will be reprinting them all with the walls on the inside of the room rather than added to the outsides

Also will have to cut 1cm off 2 edges of all the metal plates - Not happy.

Will set me back a week or 2 on completing it :(

I know the problem, and so much thought has to be put into it if you wanna build a 3D board, play modular, use HeroScribe, write rules, etc pp.
It's a royal pain in me arse.

Knight, I am lucky enough to have a mate that works at a place that owns a metal cutting guillotine, so in theory he will save me several days of re-cutting and filing metal :)

I see him Tuesday, so with anyluck I will have all the metal pieces back in a week or so with the correct 3cmx3cm per square.
