A few new ideas

Postby torilen » March 4th, 2014, 10:26 pm

I've been rolling an idea around in my head the last day or two, I just haven't figured out how to implement it yet.
Take the idea of a hydra, where if you cut off one head two new ones appear...turn it into a magical "trap" over
the whole dungeon of an entire quest.

It would work best with some sort of undead or created monster, instead of living monsters. We'll use skeletons.
You can do it one of two ways:
- There are specific spawning points throughout the dungeon where two new skeletons appear every time a hero kills one skeleton.
OR
- Every time a hero kills a skeleton, the bones immediately melt into dust, split into two piles, and magically form into two new
skeletons.

Obviously, this would present some interesting problems for the heroes. They will have to find a way to defend against the skeletons
without killing them. Perhaps there is only one way to kill them without spawning new skeletons...fire, for example, or holy water or
some such method.

I wanted to simply post this as a ready-made dungeon, but can't decide the best way to create it so anyone can plop it down into any
set of quests, just as an extra quest if needed, without having to have quests before or after it to set it up.

==================================================================================================================
Here is an idea I've had for a long time, but haven't gotten around to turning into a heroquest monster yet.
The name is, for all intents, copyrighted, so please do not use the name if you plan to post anywhere outside of the Inn.

Aura Cat
This magical creature has the ability to produce aura's at will, and keep them as long as it wishes.
The typical design behind this creature was that it create auras that were not directly harmful to those
around it - anti-magic aura, protection against good/evil (as an animal, it is naturally a neutrally aligned creature),
cold aura (either slowing those around it or causing problems that naturally occur with cold weather), heat
aura (same design as cold aura)... ...simple auras that cause issues for those who might fight the creature.

The creature design is basically the same as the real-world Lynx. If you want to make it a nice challenge for a hero, it could be
designed after the Eurasian Lynx, as those are the largest and heaviest. It wouldn't be TOO much of a problem, as they are
typically solitary creatures. It could be the lead-in to a set of quests, however, as they feed on many types of animals.
Perhaps some farmers who live on the edge of a wooded area need help with missing animals, and it turns out that the
lynx is coming and dragging them off.

Perhaps the heroes want to hunt the creature down for its skin. Maybe the magical nature of the creature is retained when
the skin is turn into clothing, and so they could have the skin made into a cloak or vest or some other such article.

sounds like a fun quest to me :)

and the hydra skeleton could be fun, but also a lot of trouble, if the heroes don't figure it out in time... But then that's the challenge.

Just escaping the Skeletons could be fun. Have one Skeleton guarding a series of doors. Each splits into two nearby squares on Zargon's turn when "killed". The Heroes need to rush forward tactically as the way is cleared while simultaneously fighting a rearguard to hold back the growing horde.

you could give the skeletons the ability to resurrect and duplicate the others, but don't tell the players of this mechanic until after the first resurrection. The skeletons all have to die on the same turn or they will soon swarm the heroes, and thus this gets harder and harder to do.

This idea is full of win! Similarly what about beating the bandages off a mummy, so to speak, so it comes back as a zombie then the skeleton rising out of the pulverized zombie. kinda gross but cool story-wise. An evil necromantic nesting doll. I just like the idea of skeletons that always come back on a :blackshield:, that might become a permanent house rule for higher level heroes.

pumonca - thanks for the comments/idea. I hadn't seen your reply.
I do like the idea of a zombie turning into a skeleton. Skeletons are weaker than zombies, so it provides a bit
more of test without becoming completely overwhelming. And, as you said, it is kind of disgusting...I can imagine
a destroyed zombie sloughing off its decaying flesh and rising as a skeleton, leaving a pile of gunk on the floor
where it died...kind of fun for roleplaying. :)
