Larger Playing Boards (or Magnetic?)

I magnetize the bases on all my miniatures. While I don't have a magnetic HQ board transport is very easy and I don't have to worry about them tipping over. I would really like to see a magnetic HQ board though...

That too was my initial thought about the doors, they're top heavy so maybe magnetic bases might weigh them down a little. So I'm thinking I can print onto sticky A4 sheets like I did for the quest packs I won't buy, stick them onto magnetic A4 sheets and trim them for use as a dungeon crawl.

Info I used for mine. One portion of the strip was somehow weaker than the rest, other than that they hold superb. No problem with door tipping over at all http://forum.yeoldeinn.com/gallery/image_page.php?album_id=15&image_id=321. It is a bit tedious going over every single mini and trimming all the bases.

I see. I think I'd only do the doors and the board to reduce the number of times when they tip over slide around. I don't think I'd want to do mini's, you clearly have more patience than I

I have a magnetic board. The game board is 2 sheets of thin but rigid steel sprayed black laminated and hinged with gorilla tape. (it's really heavy). The modular rooms and passages have magnetic sheet bases, nothing else is magnetic. It works well but in hindsight there is possibly a better way - magnetic paint, I saw this in a hardware store. It has iron particles in it so you can stick magnets to it, that could be sprayed onto a board, just to prevent lateral movement of magnetic based things.

I have an Ork Army with fully magnetized Bases for faster setup on the Battlefield and faster cleanup afterwards.

I would not do it again. You save a little bit of time setting up the game, but you lose a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot lot lot of time magnetizing all the bases.

Foam cases are better for the need - they cost no time producing them, fit with every model randomly bought on ebay (or can easily be customized) and you can throw the case 20 meters without damaging the models.

For the Game Board however, it might be a good Idea to paint a large base (or directly the table?) with magnetic paint and use magnetic self-gluing foil on the board tiles. That might be a fast and sufficiently cheap method.

I'd not recommend magnetic paint. The adhesive power is much lower than that of solid metal. To reach a sufficient strengh you have to do several layers of paint which sum up to more weight than the metal. It's ideal for surfaces that can't be easily made of, or covered with, metal, but for a flat board, a sheet of steel is the better solution.

How about a sheet of magnetic paper as the base? It would roll so transportation might be better. You'd just have to work out whether there's polar issues or not. I'll try that tonight when I get home.

magnetic A4 sheets

So I picked up this pack last night. The stuff is quite thin, clearly because it needs to be able to go through inkjet printers, so I don't think it would be suitable simply to add weight to doors. As a complete sheet, it sticks quite well to the fridge but I'll try cutting them out and seeing how it goes with a substantially reduced surface area, might be fine. I have come across another product which comes in varying thickness's (0.6 mm - 1.2 mm) so might see how that goes.

I just got my ebay order of rare earth magnets that are 1mm thick and 3mm in diameter.
I am going to counter sink them into the base of each miniature, and they are strong enough that they will hold the miniature to my metal game tiles...
will post pics when I get around to actually doing it...
