Removing paint from plastic miniatures

Postby Daedalus » July 28th, 2011, 11:57 am

How is it safely done? My bud and I gave some Skaven parts a mineral spirits bath, and it started to remove the primer in about a minute. Didn't stop there, though. By the time we noticed and removed them, it was too late. Now they resemble partially-melted army men. :smack:

I haven't tried it on HQ minis; but I am sure the plastic is almost the same for model kits: Easy-Off Oven Cleaner.
Spray them, let them sit 20 mins, then rub the paint off.

I've heard about this working on metals before. Couldn't remember how plastic worked out. Thanks. Now if I can only find some in Taiwan...

This strips the paint off my Polystyrene models, leaving all the details behind.
Also a lemony-fresh scent.

Useful for cleaning your oven, too; only it needs a shitload of rinsing afterwards.

I read that Dettol works on plastic too. Leave em in for a few days, and you can brush it off. Takes time though.

Thanks- I'll keep my eyes open for Dettol as well. Any lead may prove useful in this product-forsaken land. Carrefour or B&Q might carry it... if I'm lucky.

Dettol works really well, just put them in a tub for a couple of days, give them a scrub with a toothbrush every so often and you're good to go.

It's a frack'n miracle! Talking to a gaming friend the other day- it turns out he shipped some Easy-Off back from the States a couple of months back. The kicker is he actually plans to use it for cleaning his oven. From a gaming standpoint, using Easy-Off for anything but painted plastic models reminds me of opening a door with a Genie spell. But from his point of view it makes perfect sense, as he is notoriously lazy. This is the first time I'm glad he is. :D
