Definitely the cheap ones.
It all adds up if one were to add a whole lot of minis to the HQ collection.

I agree the one part mold should be fine for bases.

Going back a little,

Thantos wrote:Thanks Bene :D Im now using a home brew SLA printer similar to the 3DLP printer by robot factory. Ive been interested in 3D printing for a long time (im doing a BSc degree research project on 3D additive manufacture this year too) and love to tinker with resin an mechanics, while applying this to miniatures. Some of the more complex parts i send to a contact at product design company to sneak onto their silly expensive Objet Eden. I offer a prototyping service on the site if you are interested ;)

So you get results like this with a home brew printer?
Well, I have to wholeheartedly commend your archievement.
And you can work with 3D printers in your daytime job?
I'm totally envious now - in a good way.

Pitily this information seems of little use for my own work. :(
I don't have the resources (mainly time) to build my own printer, even if I had the knowledge. Also, from what I know, SLA printers are costly, matrial-wise. This would also be prohibitive for most minis I did so far, as I do not print prototypes for recasting, but I use the 3D printer to produce minis that are not possible to cast traditionally because of their hollow forms.
What can you tell me about that? How expensive is the material? And how sturdy? Could a printout be used as an actual gaming miniature?

But still, it is good to have a professional around here.

Have a look ;)

Would a RepRap printer be a 3DLP? I have only briefly read about it but have had my interest piqued by reading this.

Nope. Although "RepRap" by itself just means the printer can reproduce itself (in fact only some structural parts, you still have to buy the electronics), all actual RepRap printers use Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), whereas SLA uses photorecative materials and a projector.
Have a look ;)

Ok. That's a good simple and concise answer.

Potions nearly there, casts are a bit dirty, so will be a little more tweaking until they are on the store. They have a silly high index of refraction, so anything painted to a hole drilled into them will colour the whole bottle. :D

Thanks Bene, my day job is doing 3D models for training simulations in the oil and gas industry. Evening job is doing miniatures and 3D printing. And my university degree is 3D CGI where im researching 3D printing for part of my final year. Would love to get a nice paid job working with 3d printers, would be a dream :D
Im hardly a professional :P just some guy following an interest in additive manufacturing to borderline obsession  My girlfriend jokes i spend more time with printer and pc than with her! :?

The resin comes from makerjuice and is about £110 a liter, plus i mix in some extras to fine tune it, like pigments. Its not too bad since there are a good few open source projects out there, so you can just cannibalize from them. There is a bit of cleanup involved since overhangs need supports for them to print. Not really suitable for direct sale, but good for the masters for moulding.

Which machine are you working with? Sometimes I have larger parts that i need to pay to print on a FDM machine. I have a build area the size of 6 postage stamps!
