I am seeing many posts with an image that shows with the text. I attempted the /img tag but it didn't work and I ended up having to put a direct link in my post. Is this another one of those things one cannot do until they meet a quote of x posts?

You have met the quota, to add images you need to upload them.

I found my attachment section in my control panel but no place about uploading

Depending on the service you use, there's different ways to copy the original URL/file and then embed that in our IMG tags, but it's never as simple as copying the search bar entry.
You need to go to your picture IN the service and then see what a right click offers you. Something like "Copy link" or some such. Try that out.

Your image is on a https server. That sometimes work and sometimes not, depending on that hosting server.

I've made good experience with flickr.

Imgur gives a special link that says for forums. Works everytime.
