They're quite different games, of course, but I think they both do a decent job of simulating the "Zombie movie" feeling. However, many in my gaming group prefer co-op over competitive, so I think that's why Zombicide was a bigger hit and has gotten more plays.

Yeah, at the time that the 1st Ed. came out there were only a few Zombie games on the market, and none as well developed as Zombies!!! I only kept up through 3.5, but that was enough to have a pretty expansive game when the 3 core sets were combined. At some point my group just stopped playing it. This was around 2002 or so maybe? Back then TCInc was still a tiny company and the online community was fairly interactive with the Devs and vise versa--I don't know if that is still the case or not.

I think Munchkin took over as the semi co-op take-that game for us as my Daughter was using it to learn to Read! Anyway, we just never went back to Zombies!!! I still have all of my 1st Ed. stuff (Somewhere in a box), and I have fond memories of the game. Particularly some of the nifty Fan-made missions TCInc used to host on their site (maybe still do?).

In fact, I held off on Zombicide for ~ 2 years because I thought I had my "Zombie Game" covered for the collection... Then I played Zcide and have really never looked back. My son plays the App version of Zombies!!! on the iPad and enjoys it. But he likes Zcide better.

That's a really interesting point, QorDaq. |_P I hadn't thought about this game in the context of "it existed for several years before Zombicide." Yeah, I'm sure for several years, Z!!! was likely the "best" zombie game out there. But we've all seen what's happened with that theme since then...

Might have to check out the app version if it's free or cheap.

The App version is affordable if I recall correctly ~ 5-6 bucks and VERY well implemented. It's been a while since I made the purchase, and I don't remember if there are expansions available or not, but the base game is quite playable and you can even solo it.

As to its pedigree and history, you are correct, not only did it exist before Zcide, but it was around before Zombie Board Games flooded the market. And really, before there was a huge Zombie-centric pop culture.

The only other game I distinctly remember (and owned a copy at some point), was a graphics light game from Jolly Roger (I think?) that had Standees for Zeds and text-only cards. The best part of that game was the Mall game board/ maps. In fact I think it was called Maul of America or some similar play on words. I am sure there were other Zombie-themed games on the market, but it just wasn't really "A Thing" yet.

Anyway, point being, Zombies!!! really was kind of ground-breaking at the time, and it's implementation of minis and distinct art styles for cards and tiles made it something special. Not saying Zombie couture (In the abstract sense), originated with Zombies!!! but TCInc was certainly on the cutting edge.
