Is WHQ better than HQ? That's a matter of opinion that isn't likely to be reconciled. WHQ has more detail, but is also more fiddly. Check this thread at BGG.

You can play WHQ with a gamemaster. It is in the Advanced rules. An adventure comes in the back of the book that 4 heroes and a gamemaster play together. The two expansions continue this campaign with a gamemaster. Some people just don't prefer to play it that way.

Sinned wrote:2) It's pretty expensive on eBay etc. Because of the hype? Because it's a collectors item? Because it's such a great game?

The market drives the price. Unfortunately, certain Ebay sellers distort the game's value with inflated Buy It Now numbers. If it were all auction, I think those prices would still be more than double the $70 it originally retailed for. Keep in mind HQ saw a far greater distribution at a lower retail of $25-$30, so it auctions for a lot less now.

Sinned wrote:3) Does the main WHQ game contain 'enough'? There are some expansion sets and card sets. To me: HQ is in many ways so great because of the expansions. Just having the main HQ game is boring in my humble opinion. Is this also the case with WHQ?

The main lacking of WHQ is the figures. Even though you get a 60+ for the basic game, higher battle-levels aren't represented. To fill out the game to battle-level 10, you'll need to purchase a super-enormous-buttload of (vintage) GW miniatures. I'm still searching for proxies, as the cost runs into the thousands otherwise (many of mine are rebased Mage Knight bargains). As for other stuff, I'd say the treasure card and hero pack expansions are worthwhile. You'll get mileage out of them, but if you need to collect 'em all, you're in for a large expense. The boxed adventure expansions are nice, but not necessary to have a full game. There's even a rare mail order traps expansion, but I'd say you don't need it.

Remember the GW legal department files purge a few years back? A lot of online fan-created material was lost then. Slowly more stuff is being made. Also, sources of WHQ published material is still circulated through unscrupulous file-sharing. The lawyers can't completely erase what is out there...at least not yet.

Sinned wrote:4) Can the WHQ tiles, rooms, halls etc be easily used for HQ? Or doesn't the scale of the tiles, rooms etc match with HQ? (If I don't get the game I'm thinking of printing the tiles etc)

The tile squares are about 25% larger than HQ squares. I imagine you could play them seperately well enough, say as different levels or sections. But they won't match up exactly. Maybe you could reduce your printing size to match the HQ scale (a square is 7/8").

Sinned wrote:Thanks in advance for your advice/answers!

No problem sharing information about a great game. I think I actually prefer WHQ over HQ. That's why I'm actively houseruling HQ--I want to make it better than WHQ in my eyes. HQ dice combat is so much better to me.

Thanks for the extensive info!
After reading this and BGG I think the only thing I'd like about WHQ is the artwork. It seems that everything I like about HQ isn't in WHQ.
And I kinda knew WHQ needed more minis, but not as extreme as you say!

I'll still keep my eye open for a great deal (for the parts/tiles etc), but will definitely stick to HQ.

But if you and your playing group want to try something else, why don’t you buy a totally different game, like talisman, dungeon quest or maybe legend of drizzt, or descent 2?

Last month there was a GameFair (the biggest in the Benelux) in my hometown. They had Descent 2 there.
I knew the game by name, but never played it. I also knew Descent 1 and all the expansions are OOP and can be expensive.

To be honest, I was thinking about getting it before is gets OOP and sought after as well.
Then again: I need to play it first to actually see if I like it. (It kinda looks great tho')

Yep. Beursgebouw. Don't know if they had Zombicide (I don't know that game?). I'll start a thread for the 2013 edition.
