Spell Casting Needs Components

Postby torilen » August 22nd, 2010, 3:08 pm

As many of you are probably familiar with, a lot of fantasy settings that use magic require that casting a spell
requires some sort of material component in order to be able to cast the spell.

This is possible with heroquest, and still keep it simple.
Fire spells - need fire (flint and stone can produce this easily enough)
Water spells - simple...need a small vial of water
Air spells - this one is easy...just blow on your hand as you cast
Earth - need some dirt, which may or may not be abundant depending on the dungeon in which you find yourself

Just an idea - could create a little more depth for the characters, having to hunt down or buy the materials needed
for the spells - and could create a purpose for all the extra treasure - or even create some bonus treasure ideas
(they find a vial of water still intact)

Interesting, very interesting idea. Now along with another posting on this site with new spell classes mist, ember etc.. you would need water and fire to make mist and water and dirt makes mud etc... and if you run out of water you could not cast mud ... as stated more character depth. If and I state IF your players are looking for that. Some people like the simple play way, other might really enjoy that. Wil have to try it with my players one day after trying to figure out cost and chance of breakage of water vial, or dirt leaking out of bag etc.. If you come up with some idea post them here.

So - here is what I've come up with. Of course, you can always come up with your own, or
offer other suggestions here. These are just my thoughts:
Fire Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to produce some sort of spark or
flame (must at least have on hand a flint/steel or lit torch or such)
Water Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to sprinkle or pour a small bit
of water (as from a small vial or a water-skin)
Earth Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to sprinkle or pour a small bit
of dirt
Air Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to throw a bird's feather to the
ground and crush is under foot
- Genie spell - peacock feather
- Swift Wind spell - swallow feather
- Tempest spell - blue jay feather
Cinder Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to burn a bird's feather
- Burning Cloud spell - raven's feather
- Warmth spell - cardinal feather
- Dazzling Shower spell - dove feather
Mist Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to place a bird's feather into
at least a small amount of water
- Mist of Health spell - goose feather
- Acid Mist - coot feather
- ??
Ash Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to sprinkle a small amount of
ashes
Mire Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to crush a bit of dried
mushroom under foot
(different mushrooms for each spell - haven't gotten to this yet)
Lightning Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to crush a bit of electric
eel skin under foot
Ice Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to drop a bit of sand into at
least a small amount of water
Elf Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to crush a small amount of
tree bark under foot
- Deep Sleep spell - weeping willow
- Double Image spell - maple
- Hypnotic Blaze spell - aspen
- Timestop spell - pine
- Disappear spell - white ash
- Slow spell - oak
- Twist Wood spell - birch
Darkness Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to sprinkle a small
amount of dark ink (indigo/squid ink/etc.)
Detection Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to sprinkle a small
amount of sand
High Magic Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to sprinkle a small
amount of gold flakes
Necromancer Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to sprinkle a small
amount of FRESH blood, or must be able to crush a small bone under foot
Protection Spells - (haven't come up with anything for these yet)
Storm Master Spells - at the end of the casting, caster must be able to sprinkle a small
amount of silver flakes

Chaos Spells - as Necromancer Spells
Barbarian Chaos Spells - caster must be able to mix a small amount of FRESH blood with
at least a small amount of water
Elf Chaos Spells - caster must be able to spread a small amount of FRESH blood onto
tree bark
(different bark for each spell - haven't gotten to this part yet)
Orc Shaman Spells - (haven't come up with anything for these yet)

Ya, that's why necs usually lose 1 bp casting a spell; they are sacrificing some of their OWN blood. As for bone bits, there have got to be enough scavengable from fallen foes...

Unless its poison dagger - then they simply need the poison ingredients. Which they could also scavenge in the maze.
