Ah, you've got agility as part of standard defence, makes sense now.

I thought I'd spotted an error with the swords and you'd just accidently got them the wrong way round. I didn't see that the bastard sword is one handed, that makes sense too now.

So basically, just ignore me.

You could give the elf weaker coloured defence dice and allow him to dodge if he rolls all black shields. I thought about doing something like this for my dodge rule but couldn’t figure out a way to get it to work so I went for a separate roll of the same number of dice as they rolled skulls but with a selection of different dice to choose from you might be able to get it to work.

Doing it the that way you get the benefit of dodging more powerful attacks easier than weaker ones but you have to roll separately. The way I just suggested you could incorporate it into the standard defence roll.

Just an idea.

Thanks for the suggestions, I thought long and hard about making the elf defense weaker than the dwarf, but as I said I wanted it so their single character die said alot about the character.
I also considered a "dodge" mechanic as such, but I decided just to make it part of their single die.
The single die is the character, everything else is the gear and the equipment restrictions etc gives the balance

Barbarian Rolls black for attack and defense - so 4/6 chance of a hit, but only 2/6 for defense. This is due to their rashness in combat, and starting in speedos...
Dwarf is the solid warrior with even attack and defense.
Elf has agility so is harder to hit, but due to having spells they need to be weaker in attack
Wizard sucks at both attack and defense until it gets magical gear but i will be addressing the problems for them in late game both with the gear I have provided and also the additional spell masteries and synergy schools I am going to introduce.

I also changed it so helmets and bracers granta sinlge die re-roll instead of granting an extra defense Die.
My biggest aim was to allow for a much more interesting and broader selection of gear, with advantages and disadvantages, give characters alot more things to spend gold on to keep it relevant to the game, and not to make anything overpowered compared to the original game system.

Play testing thus far (5 quests into RotWL) shows it works well for my family and is pretty balances and FUN !

armor ain't that heavy
the common concept of elves does not square with them being so weak as to not be ABLE to wear heavy armor, three lousy spells are not really much consolation

not exactly cannon there with the elf opinions....

I meant you wouldn't need to use a seperate roll like I did. The orange dice would work best, only a one in nine chance of dodging with two dice but it wouldn't negate any amount of skulls.

I just really like the idea of dodging on all black shields because it would make it harder the heavier the armour he was wearing. You'd lose easier dodging for stronger attacks though doing it that way.

You could make a basic version of this with a reduced weaponry so that each character has a certain colour that they always use and each piece of equipment just has a dice amount.

/hands coffee to cynthialee

Yeah I agree with you on elves - there are warrior elves that can and do wear heavy armour, but the Elf in heroquest to me is more of an agile leather armour ranger spell flinger.
I guess this is a part of why i have added the icons I have to the character cards...
If you wanted an elf in heavy armour in my system they would have the warrior icon on their card (more BP and less MP), thus can use heavy armour, but wouldnt be a spellcaster anymore in the traditional hero quest sense.

I am also going to be playing around with a paladin type character and a cleric / priest type
and you will notice I have already got an Alchemist - who is going to happen to be a crazy old dwarf...
