I've got the uk version, and i dont see the point in the short sword at all. The staff is better or equal in all ways and costs less.

Doesn't the staff use two hands, though? You can use short sword + shield together, but not staff + shield. So the staff is not *strictly* superior, just mostly superior.

In uk version only battle axe limits shield use.

That would make sense if it was written on the card, or if they said the staff was wizard only. But as it is, there seems no point in wating 50 more gold to get it!

Cheers, I think I agree.. plus I found a pic online that says "Armoury" for the American rules (assuming its orig, a lot of custom stuff going on out there).. that states Staff is 2 handed, so I might borrow their rule.
I've already borrowed "trading items" rule, since that is not mentioned at all in the UK/EU rules!
