They were not meant to be played in any order (past the first), because the heroes aren't characters in a setting, they're programmed game events that can be operated by a player. The game isn't Dungeons & Dragons, and players that have future prospects are in the wrong chair. The point of playing a Hero is High-Score--the character record sheet; basically, also a Score Card. Instructing a player to circle those Quests so-accomplished is actually a subtle way to record the Quest the Hero eventually will die in. The math clearly supports this idea--the Quests actually do not become harder as they go in the base game. The first Quest is practically the most difficult Quest in the set, even. Equipment represents temporary power ups that you hate to lose but eventually will. Its not about Heroes that make a name and level up, its about the player who has won a stack of dead heroes that tell the story of his own exploits.
