You have it right, there.
Do I have to explain again what an alternate reality is and how freaking obviously the HQ fluff is an alternate reality to the Warhammer fluff?
It's a literary device and as such and thorugh the sloppiness of HQ fluff authors it is simply a fact that it's the case.
In other words: HQ was intended to take place in the Old World and through intention OR sloppiness there are contradictions to Warhammer lore (partially the Warhammer lore being changed and retconned AFTER HeroQuest), which is, however, now CANON, the HeroQuest lore is an alternate reality (with a time shift, too, but with the Old World map published as HeroQuest material) to the Warhammer history. Period.
I know I'm being very arrogant here

, but I'm also very adamant, because it's just a freaking fact and cannot be "interpreted"* any other way, except chaoticprime's reality-in-a-reality version, which is a tighter, more specific variant of mine.
That all does not mean that anyone writing a HQ quest has to (or even should) limit himself in such a way.
I use all kinds of minis I see fit and I will continue to shape my own fantasy setting around HeroQuest, similar to what Torilen describes.
I have awesome snakemen; Warhammer doesn't. So fraggle GW.

*my point being, concerning HQ fluff we're beyond interpreting, it's just describing what we see: the Old World map published as HeroQuest material; the Morcar/Morkar analogy and spelling difference, the chaos armies including greenskins, as in Warhammer 1st edition, but not since 4th or something and so on etceterapeepee.
