A New Overhaul //Quest Pack//Home Brew HeroQuest

Postby Azure » December 11th, 2024, 7:36 pm

Hello fellow adventurers of the Depths. It's been quite a while. I was away, doing important IRL Stuff.

I wanted to log in, see how the forum had evolved along with seeing the new contributions. I have a specific TOPIC, that I need help with.
If anybody here on this forum is very familiar with HeroQuest, and the Diablo Series, hit me up, as I need your perspective.

:blueorb: :redorb: :chaoswarrior: :redorb: :blueorb:
Here is my current dilemma. I have been obsessed with HeroQuest for the most part since 2018. I have been a homebrew RPG creator/thinker since the mid-90's. I have been a DM for DND5E since 2019. I want to create quest packs, new equipment, new monsters and new spells that all of you can enjoy in your personal HQ adventures... However, I am also witnessing an incredible quantity of HQ stuff that is ALREADY available on multiple websites, including YeOldeInn.

This dilemma pushes me toward the following opinion ;
:blueorb: Why even bother creating Quest Packs and New Stuff, if my creation will just be DROWNED into the OCEAN of already available HQ material ? :blueorb:

:redorb: Can somebody tell me if my creations could create excitement for users and players of HQ ?
:redorb: If my stuff is too convoluted, should I instead WRITE my own RPG that is similar to HeroQuest ?
:redorb: is there anybody here trying to make a Diablo-themed HeroQuest MOD (or a DARK-FANTASY Mod for HQ) ?

Thank you very much, I will come look at this post VERY FREQUENTLY.
I await your answers. Thank you very much.

I say put out your contributions if you want to. Is your goal to become more popular than other creators? Is it to make money selling them? If not, then nothing should hold you back, except perhaps the fear of criticism.

Then again, I feel like generally, for free HQ based mods, nobody really cares that much... they will take what you created and modify (to some degree we all homebrew HQ, so nothing is exactly like someone else's game) it to their liking and use it, or just ignore it. Rarely will you find someone who will rip it apart and make you feel bad for making it, or feel pressured to change it (now if you ASK for feedback, that's different, people will provide it, and it can be positive or negative, but around here it tends to be constructive I've found, thankfully). There's just a lot of difference in taste.

But if you put your stuff out there to be used, sure. You have no way of predicting whether it will be accepted and used or not. Many may just never tell you since you don't see them posting about it online. Once you start sharing it, people will may start talking about it. ;)

Other people have written their own "games similar to HeroQuest" so you wouldn't be totally unique there. Again not everyone agrees exactly how they would modify HQ, so chances are they won't play it exactly as written, but may simply be inspired by you to make their own mods.

As far as selling goes, of course care has to be taken to change the names of things and make it clear it's not an official Hasbro/Avalon Hill/GamesWorkShop product, without the license. Same with the Diablo (or any other commercial) IP. Good luck! |_P

Do it for yourself. There are people who play often enough that they run out of quests, and there are also those who don't have the money to buy expansions, so you will have some audience and a non-zero number of people are likely to at least look at it. But ultimately, it might be that no one finds it useful or cares to check it out, and you have to be okay with that.

I assume you are right. If we take into consideration the dozens of new RPGs, TTRPGs, Card games, solo TTRPGs, and other stuff around the Internet - - - Most creators do it for themselves first, even if only 20 people end up purchasing the product. I think it's a demonstration of creativity somehow.

If you need something to do, you can collaborate with me on my ideas.

I would advise you to put the content out there and, provided you have not put out anything offensive, not concern yourself for what others think. By all means, feel free to promote your material [1], but understand that ultimately the joy is in the act of creation and sharing it with others.

There are plenty of singers and bands out there that don't get the coverage they deserve, but they still put on a cracking gig for the two dozen people who did turn up and watch them down the pub. We'd all like to think that we were the Shakespeare of Heroquest and our quests would still be enjoyed five hundred years from now, but in all honesty that's not going to happen. If you're not creating art for the love of it, you're doing it wrong. So take pride and joy in your creation and be grateful that the internet allows others you the chance to share it with a wider audience!

[1] By extension, if you wish to receive praise, be ready to praise others whose work you have admired or has inspired you too!

I don't believe a Diablo-themed MOD has been done before, though you should check the Search field to be sure. A very nice Cthulu-based MOD has been done not too far back, check AshQuest on YouTube.
