The CoPD dragon was given his own rubber "boot" in the retail version, but it really doesn't improve stability of the model EXCEPT when you're trying to balance him on a stack of "skull" damage tiles!
It's too bad in the retail book they accidentally nerfed his stats (copy and pasting it from the previous boss, who is quite a bit weaker than the Mythic dragon was).
The Dragon's "final form" in First Light is a much tougher opponent. Designer Doug Hopkins lamented that his idea for the design wasn't as well recieved as he had hoped, but it was meant to more closely resemble that of the classic ("blood thirster") gargoyle, like a man transforming into a humanoid dragon. I have no problem with it, personally. It's more like the Frozen Horror, but an explicit "double" round base ("surfboard" design just like they gave the Giant Wolves in the remake of MOTM). I like that these double round bases can serve as a little "tray" for the skull tiles (as opposed to the new boss Ogres which have that little pointy loincloth danging down and making it difficult to do the same trick without creasing your tiles).
But in terms of "looks like something tough but also plausible that they could stand a chance of beating in combat"? Absolutely. When "Joe's Dragon" was made, they hadn't yet approved the Frozen Horror remake (as part of the game line's return to retail) so "big base" monsters hadn't yet been re-introduced, so it seems that was the experimental check. The snap together 3d printed base that's out there designed for the CoPD dragon works well. It can serve as both a tray for the skull tiles AND for the heroes surrounding and attacking him.
