The last image has too much black area in it.

I want to encourage the unknown potion idea. This is something I have been thinking about for a while. Realizing the simplicity(relative) of HQ in general is why I still enjoy it, and I do understand the comments about not wanting to use tables. My ideas:

1. Wizard knows alchemy and can "discover" what the potion is. For a small fee of course.

2. Between quests the potions can be examined at the potion shop, for a small fee.

3. All characters can pay to learn alchemy skill and test their own potions. Maybe only in between quests or at the alchemy bench?

4.Unknown potions are that, and must be consumed to figure out what they are(why would any sane person do that, wait they are HEROES!). Use tables and d6/d20's for effects and strength of effect.

5: potion deck: when u draw unknown potion, draw from separate potion deck

1-3 Simple:could be used w/ standard set of potions, assigning a number between 2-12 for each potion, roll 2 red movement dice for effect.
Example: roll 7=healing potion

1-3 Complex: Use tables and larger dice to determine effects.

I am sure others have better ideas than I do. Just putting this out there.

Again I understand that referring to tables and using other dice may not be everybody's idea of fun. That is why as Zargon/Morcar you have the choice to use what rules you see fit, as long as you are consistent with your heroes. In my own games I usually follow stock rules at least through the original quest book, then after that start slowly incorporating as many additions as the heroes like. Some heroes like vanilla rules all the way through, others want as much as I can throw at them. In my homemade quests, it is not always good to charge into a room and slaughter everybody. Sometimes those goblins gathered around in the corner were betting on a rat fight. In the end it is not about what is "right", but what the players like. It is a game and the first rule is to have fun.

Obviously it's a table to start with in design (like my armoury etc) but the end result doesn't have to be. It could be like the US Armoury, simply the alchemists. Pictures of various bottles, like the quest book, with brief descriptions. On the shop card have a number, that's the number used when rolling, now there's no need for an extra table.

I like the idea of a potion deck but these could easily be in the treasure deck anyways, doesn't save the issue of lots of printing.

thank you for the feedback!

1) I had considered this, but ultimately decided it was problematic.
2,5) This is the upcoming house rule for my group, and it combines with #5. They pay 5g to identify the potion, then draw from a potion deck to get the result. Or...
4) they are in a bind, are broke, or simply impatient. so, they drink the mystery ooze to see what happens. For this reason, I will be stocking poison in the Potions deck.

also considering changing the name to Alchemy deck. that would allow for the inclusion of alchemy equipment and materials other than potions...

That's a clever work-around!

The set is shaping up well! If I may offer an opinion about Large Chest!, I'd say the grayed floor doesn't tie in with the clean lines of the b&w chest. The effect is it pops, but too much . . . at least, that's the impression I got. In comparison, the transition from the gray floor to the chest in the Small Chest! works perfectly.

The popping image does work well for the Large Gem! card, as there is a foreground separation. For the same reason, it might help if you add a gray texture to the fallen figure in the Dungeon Hazard! card. (Just impressions, these cards look great already.)
