I can see the point of what you're doing here, but it does seem a little over-complicated.
How about:

Each time you would discard a Spell to cast it, roll one combat die. If you roll a black shield, place the spell in the ring instead. This may be cast again later. You may not store more Spells in the ring than you have Mind Points.

That would make it a completely different item. I much prefer the 1 in 3 chance but only being able to store one spell at a time. It makes the player think about whether to save or use the spell and I think one spell suits a ring better anyway.
