One thing I don't like about thrown weapons is the throw it loose it rule.
So you mean to tell me I can't take the dagger I just burried in the Goblin out of his dead corpse and use it again?
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

True, losing a thrown weapon does kinda suck, however, I try to remember that the game was made with kids in mind. For us, homebrewing rules is pretty much standard now.

You could think of it this way though: when a monster is killed it is removed from the board, perhaps magically, body and all, like in video games or something. If there was a dagger stuck in its body, it would disappear too. :? Then again, what about a thrown weapon that doesn't kill the monster, shouldn't we be able to pick that weapon up? I guess you could say it broke against a wall or the floor or something... Yeah, ok, I don't have a good explanation. I guess that's why we make up our own rules. ;)

A while back Pheonix came up with a cool house-rule called Damaged Weapons. It's core concept was that a weapon is damaged if you roll all black shields while attacking (same for armor while defending). As a dagger only rolls 1 combat die to attack, a black shield would break it. Anything else means a Hero could recover it, and I'd require a Search For Treasure action to do this.

I would guess one reason for them creating the rule that thrown weapons are lost...it comes back to a
thread that has been on here for a while, I believe: What to do with all the heroes' gold??

I mean, after the first set of quests alone (the original quest booklet), each hero gets a total of around
675 gold...that is WITHOUT any found through making a search and drawing a card. What do they spend
all that gold on? They didn't have an advancement system, like phoenix, myself, and a couple of others
have come up with, where the heroes spend gold on training.

What DO the heroes indeed do with their gold?

Spend it on the super expensive one-use potions in the american books! :-D

Even the exorbident potion costs (4x-5x too high) are out-stripped by the Ebay prices of the Elf Quest Pack and Barbarian Quest Pack these days (10x too high). The Milton Bradley guys were just ahead of their time. :P

Coming back to the throwing weapons rule, our evil wizard agreed with us a rule about throwing.

You can throw a dagger, shorouken (for the samarai) and other weapons that say you can throw them or are very small. I think we made a limit on how far these can be thrown. We had a sword that broke off one of the goblins and used that to mark where the weapon was. Any hero could go and pick it up, and (i think) they can keep it and use it if they can, sell it (bit dishonourable) or give it back. After all or some (can't remember which) of the heroes have had their turn, you can't remember where it is and lose it. Thats just how we play it.

We made this rule because nobody in our group liked the throw it lose it rule and since then only needed it once. The first and only time we have used this rule I had to go and get the samarai's shouriken, and ended up losing 2 body points (thanks to a pit trap) and getting chased by a firmir and 2 orcs.

Retrieving a wepon would definatly count as an action for that round. Must be preformed before or after movement.

Yeah it does count as an action. So throwing it is an action then movement, so you can only get it on your next turn or another hero can get it on their turn
