There are many good painting programs but I use SAI… For me, it is the best I have used. I have a light pen, but it is possible to use just a mouse and have a little more patience. As a tip, I use the air brush with density 30, that helps a lot because when you draw a line it is very faint so if you do a little mistake it doesn’t matter a lot, but if you pass the airbrush many times in the right place the line gets thicker and ok. Also, the key shortcuts are very useful to paint fast. Try it.
Don’t miss the French touch, it is very important to use colors, and that’s why your paints are awesome. I used to not paint with colors and even that I can put motion between the body and sword, my paints looks very old fashioned.
In my opinion, the inking is necessary, though it is possible to do it with colors, but shadow is shadow and should be deep dark and thick.
Even the thin monsters can have shadows… Try to import your paints in SAI and add new layers. In the first layer try to put less shadow, in the second more, etc etc and make your choice by turning them on and off.
