Questions about Heroscribe

Postby SirRick » Wednesday February 21st, 2018 10:37pm

Hi, I've been brainstorming some ideas for some Quest Books, but before I start doing anything, I want to learn how to use Heroscribe properly. I want to practice by either reproducing some of the base quests, and converting some Dragon Strike maps to practice with other board layouts.

Questions
1. How easy is it to use/learn?

2. Are there other downloads or additions I need to get that are not included with Heroscribe? (Such as heroquest fonts, tiles, borders, etc. Or Dragon Strike Icons?)

3. Is making a Quest like a fill in the blanks pdf (with preset map area, introduction text area, notes, wandering monster section) or must all these things be manually formatted with each quest?

4. Will I be able to use Heroscribe to create other elements, like the cover, intro/conclusion story pages, instruction pages describing new rules, artifacts, etc?

Its a lot of questions, but I like to get an idea of what I'm getting into before I start planning anything. Also any tips will be appreciated! Thanks everyone!

1. Easy, once you get it running properly with all the background programs and functions running (ghostscript, java).

2. The All-In-One Icon pack for HeroScribe is essential. The Dragon Strike boards are in there.

3. HeroScribe only makes the maps. For further formatting the introduction and layout of a complete quest, go to Big Bene's profile and click the link to his custom quest creating thingamajings (where it says "Have a look."
Personally, I do the Introduction with the parchment in Photoshop(Gimp, export the HeroScribe map as a png, and combine/layout everything with OpenOffice writer to then transform it into a pdf.

4. No. HeroScribe is purely a map creator. Again, a combo of various programs and little helpers by HQ fans like Big Bene.

Awesome! Thanks kk! That is just what I was looking for. I checked the HeroScribe website and saw a multitude of things to download and felt a little overwhelmed.

Now that I know a little more about it, its time to start messing around and see how it goes. Hopefully, in time I can upload something worthy for the Inn!

I don't have photoshop (too expensive). I make the maps with HeroScribe then use a combination of InkScape (free program) and Microsoft Paint. Pretty easy to do and the results are good enough for my taste. You will need to download the HQ fonts.

Yeah, the fonts are important. Downloadable on the Inn's homepage AND on the HeroScribe both, I think.
