D&D - Hopes, Likes, Dislikes

Postby IvenBach » April 1st, 2014, 11:16 am

Started from http://forum.yeoldeinn.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2345. What are some things from the editions of D&D (or Dungeons & Dragons for those that might not know) that you liked or didn't.

    Dislike
  • I started with Second edition and never enjoyed the whole THac0 thing... For its time it may have seemed logical but looking back all but a singular individual I know agree it ended up being awkward and needlessly complex. 3rd edition solved it with where if total attack/skill met or exceeded AC/DC you succeed
  • Excessive number of skills in 3rd
  • Severely broken spells in in 3.0 (Harm, Hold Person to give examples)

    Like
  • 3rd giving everyone the same level limits.

This is just to get things started.

Likes:

General Stuff:
First RPG I ever played, and it was the RPG that started it all! I like D&D in it's generic form -- a framework that allows you to make your own world, instead of being bound by the publishers. The rules -- classic and 3.x -- are so universal in the world of tabletop RPGs, you can find a group and start a game without the learning curve.

The Rules:
Basic/Expert Rules are easy to use and house rule. CharGen is lase quick and easy.

The Art:
I really like the classic art. It conveyed a mood and style you don't get in the newer art. The demons and devils looked like images you'll find in old occult books. They did not shy away form violence, nudity or occult imagery. Darksun had some great art.

The Settings:
I like the idea of Darksun, but not the final result. The psychic system used in Darksun makes a great spell system, if you hate the normal system of spellcasting. Darksun also has great rules with mustering armies and the lack of 0-level men. Masque of the Red Death had some good rule ideas that could have been good prototype 3e game, and it is a good setting. I really like the factions found in Planescape. Tékumel is a deep, beautifully crafted world.

Dislikes:

General:
For all the openendness of the game, the core rules cannot escape the Tolkienesque races, and usually offers little or no alternatives (unless its 4e, and they just give you crap). The censorship really nurtured the look and feel of the game. They used really stupid names to get around the content-control. TSR crackdown on third-party games also stagnated their own games. The 2e years was a glut of source books, and the 3e years was a glut of splat books. I really hate 3.x power-gamers! They see no potential in character development beyond how the rules can augment their powers and abilities.

Rules:
AD&D and 3.x are needlessly complex. With the old rules, I didn't care much for the THAC0 system, level caps, 18/XX STR, and the five forms of saving throws. With the 3.x rules, I hate the chunky skill system, the feats that boosts two skills by +2, needlessly complex grappling rules, all those stupid prestige classes, not making the Paladin a prestige classes, and how all the bower-builds bogs down the game at higher levels. 4e sucks balls!

The Art:
The art of 2nd and 3.x years was bland and uninspired. The art of Caldwell, Elmore, Easley, etc. look more like static poses that never really convey the dangers or otherworldliness of the settings. The art style of Wayne Reynolds sucks donkey balls! He makes everyone look loud and excessive, like an annoying '90s comic book anti-hero.

The Settings:
Grayhawk, Blackmoor, Forgotten Reams and Dragonlance are all bland, generic fantasy settings. Ravenloft is just D&D but with a Monster Mash theme. Masque of the Red Death (an offshoot of Ravenloft) was a better game and setting, but it was largely a rule supplement, but not a complete rule system. If they called NWPs "skills" and killed the levels (while making hit points larger and static, like in Gamma World), then MotRD would have been better. I like the idea of Darksun, executive meddling resulted in a lot of poor ideas. I hate all the Tolkienesque races, and the shoehorned psychic rules could vex the game with random ESPers. Spelljammer was a retarded idea! I hate Eberron for the same reason as the art of Wayne Reynolds -- loud, excessive and annoying! Eberron is not a pulp or noir in any way shape or form!

Malcadon - how can you say such things about Caldwell and Easley and those early artists?
Much better than the computer generated garbage we get these days.

Yes, the works of Caldwell, Elmore, Easley, etc. are worlds better then the garbage that is being passed off as fantasy art these days, but their works don't move me. The old-school art from the '70s and '80s may not look as professional as the '90s art, but they have a charm about them, and they remind me of older works of fantasy art. Hell, off all the art Todd Lockwood did for the 3rd edition game, to me, his best work was the one that got him in the door: this b&w pic of Orcus. As for his newer stuff, I'm not impressed by his "iconic" characters -- they look too layered-up in gear and junk, and their women look ugly. (and yet they are not as ugly as Wayne Reynolds ladies)

Pushes your imagination to the limits.
You remember your quests even after 10 or more years.

Dislikes:
Very time consuming and very slow gameplay.
The GM should work for hours and hours to make the story. It’s like a part-time job.
The GM has to be very skilled to handle the story and to manage the players.

Likes: The potential for an engrossing story in a living breathing world with heroic companions who are fully fleshed out and role-played by your peers.

Dislikes: The reality that every campaign becomes a power-gaming dick measuring competition to see who can make the most broken character. Escalation of power between GM and players. (I only have 3rd edition experience)

I'll take Cyberpunk 2020 over DnD any day, where a single head-shot will end any character who gets out of hand.

A good GM can take care of those quite quickly. From traps to status conditions disabling a player there's quite a few ways to remove their effectiveness. But sadly most only want to have the 'best' character and aren't out to game as a group.

    Like:
  • Array of directions you can take a character concept in. Don't always have to play the same pigeon-holed character.
  • As GM you can add any kind of effect/idea to change up the story or mechanics. Just don't abuse it or you soon have no gamers to play with; keep it interesting and fun.
  • Ability to scale up or down depending on current battle progress. Beware the hidden dice rolls of the GM!
  • You can make your own custom magic items with a cool GM.

    Dislike:
  • Players who min/max at every chance then complain that you stop them every time. Not my fault you have no will save... (Bashers just don't save well vs spells)
  • Players that forget to bring their characters to each session... (in my humble opinion the GM should always save every sheet for next session)
  • Messy eaters and spills while gaming.

    Hope:
  • D&D Next (5th Edition) will hearken back to more classic roleplay and less combat oriented. Yeah I don't see it happening.
  • Get a fun group of roleplayers to make Gestalt characters with to really challenge them
  • Not seeing constant 1's rolled from my players. I honestly cannot believe how much it's happened to them, thankfully they just take it without complaining and roleplay it on.

Like:
The idea that your character can be anything
With a good DM the game is AWESOME
    Very interesting things can happen
Lot of source books providing the thought that the game was expandable
lots of fun numbers for people who like numbers to play with

Dislike:
Current editions multi-classing sucks *expletive deleted* (3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and pathfinder all fail in the multi-classing)
With a bad DM the game sucks *expletive deleted*
Very interesting things usually don't happen
Quantity of *expletive deleted* they attempted to pawn off as source books
    Munchkins (nuff said?)

JasonMCM what part of the multiclassing do you dislike? I've had lots of people say they dislike it but haven't had any that seemed to articulate the point well. I'd suggest checking gestalt builds where you play a lvl 1 character that is both 2 different classes simultaneously. Can lead to supremely broken powergaming but with a limited point stat buy system (15 or less) I can see the results being quite interesting.

I think it is more of a feeling thing than anything else.
-In 2nd edition you could roll up a level 1 fighter/mage. You get 1/2 each of their Hit Dice and stuff like that. Then as you play each class gets 1/2 the experience you gain and you level up each class separately.
-In 3rd edition (and other variations of it) you can roll up a level 1 fighter or a level 1 mage. From then on every level you gain you add a level in the class you didn't take last time. The feel isn't there, and in my opinion I'd rather just play a bard. (did I just say that?)
-From what I saw of 4th edition there is no multiclassing at all (I have only glanced through the books as the rest of my gaming group at the time gave it the arbitrary thumbs down that many did for whatever reason people do things like that, I thought that the system looked cool)

The Gastalt you speak of sounds interesting and I may have to look into that. Do they have an ECL? and would a starting fighter/mage have 1d10+1d4 HP? That sounds crazy OP. What about crazy combinations like a druid/paladin? are those allowed?
