Helping Friends Move Produces Dividends

Postby IvenBach » March 30th, 2014, 9:16 pm

Helped one of my friends move this weekend. Simple move itself was easily done in 2 hours. The best part of it stems from the fact that I not only got dinner from it for helping but I also got his D&D stuff. All of it is a great windfall now that I've a gaming group coming over on Thursdays. I am now the owner of...

    3.5 Edition
  • PHB
  • DMG
  • MM

AD&D (Anyone Interested in them? Ebay is very likely)
  • DM Screen and Index booklet
  • Arms & Equipment Guide
  • Book of Artifacts
  • Tome of Magic
  • Treasure Tales
  • Character Record Sheets [most are used since they played a lot]
  • DMG
  • PHB
  • MM (White Cover)
  • Wizard's Handbook
  • Bard's Handbook
  • Thief's Handbook
  • Ranger's Handbook
  • Priest's Handbook

They also found a 4th Edition Redbox that the previous owners left. The only thing missing out of it was the dice. The d4 and D12 were still in it but the rest were gone. So yeah I feel lucky to have gotten this random boon of stuff for gaming. I'm not going to use 4th edition but the map it has was quite nice.

Anywho just had to tell someone even if nobody cares.

You are lucky sir, the only thing I get from helping friends move is cheap pizza. (Beer is usually provided as well but as I don't partake in the drinking...)

Nice! Can you post some pics? I'm always interested in seeing D&D stuff. Even if I've never owned any of it nor played it.

We have done too many moves together helping others move. He figured since I like food and they were feeding some other people for dinner he might as well put more fuel back in me.

Sjeng - A quick few photos. Map and image below are from the 4th edition red box.

Re: Helping Friends Move Produces Dividends

2nd was my first DnD and I still have fond memories, but as I don't know if I ever opened a book for 2nd I don't really know the learning curve. (Awesomest DM ever, so deams my 11 year old self.)

3rd (and 3.5) was way easier to do than 4th, as 4th was a vast departure from what I knew and didn't fit the way I thought it should. (But as you haven't played any DnD you won't have a problem with 4th not fitting for you so that is a moot point.)

Then there is Pathfinder (Chaotic Prime, you are going to have to explain your wanton hate for this product to me sometime. :D ) This seems like 3.5 DnD + a little bit of Power Creep (read little bit as a whole bunch). I've never actually played it, but the rules seem mostly the same that I could drop in and not get laughed at (hopefully).

Also they are getting ready (possibly just did, I don't keep up on my DnD news) to release a new edition, that supposed to be getting back to their roots or something like that, but I highly doubly WotC can release a product to get soccer moms and clergymen as up in arms as the original TSR products.

Hope this helps

Easiest would be 3rd edition, in my opinion. I started with second but for me there were too many table for various effects and THACO was a terrible creation. If you are looking to get a fairly easy start to D20 I'd suggest http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/products/beginnerbox since they offer some FREE pdf's. That's how I'm introducing someone new to D20 gaming. You can find a lot of explanations in there for new players and the interweb is good at answering questions. As with any system they all have their own problems and pitfalls but a good Game Master can overcome those pitfalls. http://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/getting-started and follow the links on the left.

I like Basic D&D the best, myself. It takes a little more effort to determine successful attacks, as you either have to
memorize the chart or compare your rolls. But the rules are just enough to provide a good foundation for playing,
but leave enough room for plenty of role playing and making your own rules (especially for new races and classes
and such things).

Now, one thing I do really like about 3rd/3.5 editions - they provide a nice chart for how much experience characters
should get based on the encounters and fights in which they take part.

No reason you can't steal ideas or an 'improvement' from another edition and use it in the one you are currently playing. 2nd irked me with experience but that's a complete different thread that should be started.
