Ignorant American Question

Postby IvenBach » December 28th, 2013, 7:37 pm

I have seen the image below with a few variants and I simply don't get it. Can someone explain the humor to me. I'm guessing it's something that doesn't translate since I'm utterly clueless about it.

I'm even more confused now... I probably could have been more helpful with my initial post. Why are Finns so into hockey, why does the lion have both a robotic right arm and a sword impaled into his forehead, why are there white flowers? Is it just poking fun at yourselves? I had seen that initial Coat of Arms and figured as much. Then I somehow got to the hockey puck eating lion and just had to ask. I've just got a feeling that it's something more to do with national pride and historic identity than anything else, something which I've very little of.

And yes you get to thank Sjeng for this...

The picture TMU posted should be pretty self-explanatory. The coats of arms are interpreted literally.

The pic in the OP is derived from TMU's pic. It's only funny if you saw the coat of arms-picture first.

I guess Finns like hockey? The robotic leg I cannot explain...

Finlands number one sport has always been hockey, I have no idea why. It just has been, is and will be.
The arm is probably a piece of armor.
Sword isn't really going trough it's head. It means that we are ready to defend ourselves from Sweden.
The white flowers are probably because the national flower of Finland is lily of the valley, or Kielo as we call it.
I guess it is supposed to make fun of us, but I don't care ;)
We take ice-hockey really seriously!

As a matter of fact, I was just today watching it :)

Did this help you at all? :D
