Aah... Schleswig... Site of one of Denmarks many many military defeats. Damn we suck at war!
Given our history I'm surprised Denmark still exist! Thank god we are BFFs with Germany and Norway these days.
I guess having bacon as one of your main exports takes you a long way! :D

Don't you live in Southern Germany yourself kk?

Yes, me does, Sir. When the appointment stands, I'll have to beg the missus on my hands and knees.

Also, Denmark's best exports are the lyrics D:A:D had on their album Helpyourselfish.
Oh, and Esrom :cheese:
And Great Danes. Oh wait. These are from Germany, the Deutsche Doggen. My bad.

Getting curious now... Is the war for Schleswig-Holstein a big deal in German history?
It is to us as it was one of the wars that moved the borders making us an even smaller country measured in physical landmass.
Every single Danish school history book has a chapter dedicated to this war.

Also thank you for:

Karlsberg Urpils.
Kneitinger Pils.
Schneider Weiße.
Lübzer Pils.

There's not so many really, or rather I doubt that you know many of the really good ones, because the really good ones are local only.
When in Germany, always drink local beer.

Now comes the hard part to swallow (no pun intended): Germany has become a wine country in such a measure that many of the best wines come from here.
Nothing beats the average quality of a glass of wine from the Mosel region.
There you go.

Mosel Wine is just awful. Gaillac beats it every day. :D Guess i am half french by now.

The war of Schleswig Holstein? I think we have a chapter in the history books that states we did test our new cannons on Denmark and Austria, and then we invaded the "archenemy" France for the Alsace or Saar region, can't remember which one. It was quite an arrogant winner's book that i had to learn with. All in the same year, quickly made before the others could get the same cannons. In Berlin there is the "Siegessäule" that actually has golden cannons from all the three lands as ornament. :)

War was never the same again. In that time, we met one day on the battlefield and afterwards it was peace again. Only few displaced civilians.
I also remember the history book to have a world map with fat blue and red blocks, no neutrals, and Africa was drawn small in comparison with Europe. :D

Then we must have had completely different history books at school.
I never heard about the Schleswig wars until much later.
The main interest was to teach us how all wars in Europe were caused solely by the evil germans. No trace of winners's arrogance. The Franco-Prussian war was allengedly staged by Bismarck, and without the Ems Dispatch it would never have taken place.
In reality, both sides, France at least as much as Prussia, had for some time wanted and planned war (of course, Bismarck used it much to his own effect).
I love history, but I fear we could get into a political discussion, and I don't want another topic banned...
Have a look ;)

Southern Germany... hm. 3 hour drive, at the most. Thinking, pondering, and then thinking about some more pondering.

Actually, here.
Have a look ;)

Is that where you are located Bene? Before posting my previous message, I had actually done a tiny bit of recon on how much it would cost to fly, not having any reference I just went with Frankfurt, looks like I was close. Of course, and I knew it would be, it was way outside of my budget to cruise out on a lark...*Chuckle*... But it did remind me that I really would love to do a European tour at some point.

maj!
maj! = Klingon word for "Good". Used in the context of "I approve".

Big Bene,
ours was "hooray germany" until Bismarck left the boat,
then it was (50% of the book! And 50% of the Lessons! And this part EACH YEAR REPETITIVE!) how bad and evil we were
then it was how the world is divided and the americans are our heroes and the russians are bad.

Well.
I don't remember it EXACTLY, though. :)

Besides, i had a painting workshop once.
It is reachable via Plane, then via train and bus, easily (really easy!), and cheap:
https://www.google.de/maps/place/DJH+Ju ... 4d9.220634
There is a Beergarden not far, for our guests from elsewhere, who want to see south german culture. As far as i remember, the food was okay. Beer is of course always okay.

You can still see my beautiful face in the mirror of my lamp, on massive voodoo :):
http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.fr/2012/07/workshop-review-ludwigsburg-germany.html

There is also a real portrait of mine, but i won't tell where.
The "Dripping Windmill" was invented there. (It has to do with letting your pants down so i won't go into detail here :D )

I'd say if you want to, by all means continue - but perhaps create a new thread instead? It's a great topic indeed.

Besides... Learn from history or repeat it's mistakes.
We all have now learned not to misbehave and get topics banned!
