what colour to paint my bases?

Argh, that means I would have to be organised and stuff rather than the flakey scatter brain that I am! seems a lot like effort.
I remember it was in one of my rants about paint being like milk and washing up liquid... if that helps.

I painted my heroes pedestals Mint Green. And my Monster pedestals, Gold.

I put tile structure on my bases with milliput and paint them grey mostly. Some I painted in colours, like the rooms on the board.

milliput or even thinly sliced cork tile works well for the stone effect. Depends on how crafty you are feeling.

Actually, if you have a modeled base, it's a good idea to airbrush the base from the side. It will then take the shaded effect automatically. Paint the shoes afterwards : they are easy to paint and are just big enough to protect the rest of the mini from airbrush stray color.
