And is Zargon allowed to attack a hero controlled by him (i.e. through the "Command" spell) using a monster?

drathe, Do you mean Zargon rolls defense for the hero? When I read it it seemed you were saying that the player still gets to roll for his character's defense.

It doesn't matter who rolls his defense.

I never touch a hero's figure or his dice rolls. I just command him "use your sleep spell against the Barbarian and then roll your movement dice to come here between my chaos warriors"

Same. It's more fun commanding them to do it themselves.

fasty wrote:Good evening to everyone!

Hello and welcome to the forum!

fasty wrote:- if the chaos spell "Command" is succesfully casted on a Hero owning magic powers (ex. Elf or Magician), is Zargon allowed to use their magic powers too? Can he open doors?
They can avoid getting controlled by Zargon by rolling dices as soon as the spell is casted during Zargon's turn, right?

I can understand your confusion on this fine point because of the last sentence of the Command Chaos Spell: "...Zargon, on his turn, can move the Hero as a monster and attack other Heroes." Like drathe and Chaotic Prime said, I wouldn't limit that just to weapon attacks. Further reasons that add weight to allowing the Hero to cast spells:

  • The last sentence isn't stated: "...can move the Hero and attack other Heroes as a monster."
  • Monsters are allowed to both attack and cast Chaos spells as actions (p.21). By extension, it follows intuitively that the Zargon player may cast Hero spells on his turn when he controls a Hero.
  • "As the Elf or Wizard, you may cast a spell instead of attacking." (p.15) The Command spell "puts any one Hero under Zargon's control." The Zargon player becomes "you".
For consistency, I would restrict the movement of a Hero controled by Zargon to monster movement, not allowing simultaneous or alternating Hero movement rules. This means the Hero may not open doors, which is part of Hero movement (p.13). I'd say opening secret doors should also be prohibited.

Moving the Hero as a monster also restricts other activities:

  • Moving as a monster, the Hero doesn't spring hidden traps (p.18, P.21). Neither is there a need to search for or disarm them.
  • Moving as a monster, the Hero needn't bother with pit traps, either. (p.20)
  • While the Hero may move through monsters, he may not move through other Heroes. (p.21)

fasty wrote:- The Witch Lord can be attacked by the Spirit Blade only using three attack dices, is that correct?

Yes, as drathe and Chaotic Prime said. But I'd add certain buffs could be allowed with the Spirit Blade:

  • Drinking a Potion of Heroism would allow a second attack. If you choose to apply the multiple attack rule from the Barbarian Quest Pack, then that would allow the Witch Lord just one defense against 6 dice.
  • Drinking a Potion of Strength allows 2 extra Attack dice.
  • Since a Courage spell is cast on and a Hero and affects the Hero rather than the Witch Lord, it also should allow 2 exta Attack dice.

fasty wrote:Then I have a couple of questions that might seem stupid, but I haven't found anything about these in the rulebook:

_ can monsters escape from the dungeon going on the Stairs Tile?

Certainly Heroes complete a Quest by returning to the stairway. This is mentioned under Hero Movement, p.12. At first I thought monsters can't escape on the stairway, but after a thorough search of the rules I can find nothing prohibiting it. As drathe pointed out, there are special instances where a special monster may escape by the stairway, such as Skulmar and Kessandria attempt in Quests 8 and 9 of Return of the Witch Lord.

Commanding a Hero to exit a Quest early as part of monster movement would be a nice way of removing him. Commanding a Hero to cast Pass Through Rock and stranding him in the solid rock of a shaded region of the Quest Map would be less nice.

fasty wrote:Thanks to anyone who will be patient enough to answer to this weird newbie! :D

It's not weird at all to be confused by the rules of Hero Quest. Searching for answers often turns up unlooked-for answers that most anyone can learn from. I learned a thing or two myself.

I am pretty sure I have read that monsters cannot move onto the stairs.

I think Zargon cannot do this, as a monster never opens doors or explores new areas. He may only use it if both sides of every wall are explored.
If moving him into "unknown" is like exploring. That's just my opinion.

I disagree. There's no rule that state a monster can't. Monsters also don't roll for movement, but its obvious and sensible to assume that when under the Command spell they can.
