I usually try to keep music by the same artist(s) all together. Unless I have only a couple by the artist,
then I start grouping by style of music - 80's rock, 80s' pop/fun music, 90's grunge, etc.
You might also want to put some songs into a certain file - music for biking, music for writing, music
for playing HQ/D&D, music for driving, etc.

I use itunes, because I got an ipod for christmas a few years ago. So, I can't talk to what tool to use for
the organizing.

I personnaly use Banshee as a music player and I make the most of intelligent playlists by making specific playlist like :

Best recent music :
Year > 2014
Rating > 4 stars

Playing HQ :
Rating = 5 stars
genre = dungeon, soudtrack

But again, it only is possible if you have a fully tagged music library

I myself had bad experiences with auto-tagging music. Had lots of songs that were auto tagged year back and it screwed a vast majority of them up somehow. Since when I've never gone near them. Hope you can find a good one though.
