Why bother when you can just turn your ship's guns on the space hulk and destroy it? Right... you've got a small craft, where the "slow claw penetrates the shield" and you have to make sure none of the aliens escape to bring reinforcements, etc

It's also easier to bomb a city than to conquer it. Nevertheless, we conquer it instead of bombing it, if we can. Why? It has value. Loads of it. Difficult to replace, if ever. Empires were going down when one single city was ransacked.

So for storytelling purposes, let's assume that ships are expensive and difficult to replace.

Now. Turn your guns on it or conquer it?

I find a way why the squad raid with underpowered weapons is a good tactic.
It is politically better not to kill too many.
The ship has value.
There is information in the ship we need.
The hostage is important and needs to be freed not killed.
We want that device, this kind of thing doesn't exist anymore.
If we bomb it to pieces, the pieces might survive. We have to do it manually.

Any reason is good, I love them all.

All great points. Also sense of honor, warrior code, rules of engagement, we have our orders, etc...

Maybe this deserves its own topic, but I was reading some of the 1st edition ("Rogue Trader" from '87) and learned some interesting things (besides that the "corpse emperor" was there from the beginning)... that there are a lot of "less than lethal" options for weaponry.

Graviton Gun = makes targets heavier

Needle Gun/Needler = darts tipped with various chemicals that can be non-lethal

Web gun/Heavy Webber = sticky webbing, which can either put the target to sleep, or tightens if they try to struggle and can crush "stupid" targets to death (the first version is non-lethal)

Shotgun = can fire gas rounds instead of regular slugs/shot (see below)

grenades/grenade launcher = see above. types of gas can be psyk-out that disrupt psionics (psykers), knock-out gas, scare gas, hallucinogenic gas, smoke, stumm gas, tanglefoot, haywire (like EMP), stasis, and "crack" (breaks open armor)

Neuro Disruptor = strange crystaline alien pistol that causes confusion and non-lethal disabling state

The Power and Force Swords can be used to apply blunt or stunning force rather than shear cutting.

If I were making a "police force" Mod I see you could really do it quite easily here or even just modify the attributes of the visual weapon models by giving them different types of ammo or attachments.

I'm going to have fun with this probably...

More... so quite a bit already in the lore if one wanted to go that route of the GSG!

Heavy Webber!

I can see the appeal, too.
It is all in the logic of weapons, in fact. When you start to use real weapons with real big explosions, at some time you will just have to answer the question "why not just using the big ship to ship guns". But you would never ask that to the police force standing in front of a demonstration.

The horror, imagine you are deployed on a ship with non-lethal weapons but the other side uses the big guns. :zombie:

It really was fascinating to read in the "Grim dark universe" of Warhammer 40k, that on these battle fields, you seem to have the ability to remove figures from the table using non-lethal means, just as effectively as if you had killed them with lethal weapons. If you wanted to imagine that all around you, off camera, armies are slaughtering each other with abandon, you can still do that, but this particular scenario has rules of engagement that involve the taking of prisoners (which in the case of the good guys, could even lead to future scenarios as you try to rescue your brothers before they break under interrogation). Still "honor the brave officers who fell in the line of duty... giving the last full measure of devotion to peace and the law" is pretty dramatic too.

Right, you want to keep the peace, subdue the suspects (for questioning) and recover equipment (valuable to national security and even recovering special tech for R&D) and provide propaganda for the state ("justice is served," the enemy are savage but we are civilized, "law and order").

So I've branched off now... from preserving the unique character, flavor and nostalgia for the German edition... to adapting the "idea" of transforming it from a slaughter fest to a kind of "round up the perps" police action logic of that version.

I was thinking the Bolt pistol doesn't have to fire explosive rounds that rip open enemies and kill them. They could fire Pepper Balls that cause pain and disorientation (less lethal to disable the target for capture). The Autocannon could be a stronger version of this with higher capacity/rate of fire.

The Plasma gun is a kind of flame thrower, but instead it could fire a high density foam that is both an irritant and an immobilizing agent.

The Rocket Launcher instead of firing a rocket tipped with a warhead that shreds its targets, it could be a kind of multi-sensory disruption payload that hits the targeted crowd with bright lights, sounds, and stunning force to knock them down (and knock out machinery).

The ability to swap out ammo is another easy conversion. The bolters have clips for the pepper ball type ammo, but also EMP type rounds that can be used against mechanical targets.

The little "bayonets" on the end of the bolters could be a couple of things. One I thought they could be like an injector of paralyzing agents or like a tazer (stabbing doesn't sever arteries and cause death, but provide a contact point for applying less than lethal electrical shock). Or it could be an actual blade (perhaps a vibro-blade) that would not be used to kill, but in the specialized hands of of the expertly trained GSG, to slice open armor, creating breaches into which the nerve agents can more easily be introduced.

The melee combat does involve fisticuffs and butt stroking (the technical name for "clubbing the dude with your weapon," I'm serious), but with the use of martial arts meant to subdue rather than kill. For example the "Axe and bolter" combo is the Axe being used (either with the flat as a bludgeoning instrument or the blade to open up breaches in the armor, or destroy the enemy's weapon) in conjunction with the bolter for the stun/nerve agent introduction. The "boxing glove and sword" combo works a similar way... enough force to knock the fight out of the enemy and bang up their armor but not to crush them into a pile of scrap and cut them into julien fries with the blade as in the standard version.

The Eldar Shuriken Catapult/Cannon is easily converted by imagining instead of little throwing stars that cut the target to ribbons like tiny razor blades, but more like barbed projectiles that affix to biological targets to apply tazer type effects. The weapons can also be re-tuned for mechanical targets, to penetrate machinery and apply small EMP style effects to disable the systems (but not enough to permanently damage the CPU/memory unit for later retrieval for processing at the station).

Adding a little mechanic of the Space Marines, Eldar passing over the enemies to capture them (tag and bag for teleportation back to the mother ship) could be added to complete the conversion. The GSG are equipped with high tech cuffs (plenty of pairs, whether you have two hands or four!), gags (for bitey Orks! :orc: ). Tag the enemy with a transporter dart so they can be beamed out. These darts require the target to be fairly still explaining why they can't just dart everybody and teleport them out without a fight. I also imaging the humor of a Dreadnought being led away in chains with its "head down." Now the Tarantulas might require some more thought, but I could imagine it as some kind of riot control gun that is just a higher capacity/rate of fire version of one of the other weapons. Like a super heavy webber or hot sticky foam dispenser.

You could also incorporate bounty hunters in this, wherein they get a higher reward for captures rather than kills (which might unfortunately happen in the course of a battle as they resist arrest).

Now getting my hands on the translated Regelbuch (rule book, via online translation tools) I am delighted to find:

(English auto-translation, page 5)
Choose the weapons
Each GSG player can choose different weapons for their characters before
use. He may choose different weapons for each mission. Every player
chooses from the weapons that are the same color as his characters.

Commander
There are 3 different ways to equip the GSG Commander:

1) KiloVolt Ax and Mini Laser
This combination gives him an effective melee weapon and a limited fire
crane.

2) Power Laser
This gives him better firepower, but his melee ability is only that of a
regular GSG fighter.

3) KO sword and servo gauntlet
This combo gives him two powerful melee weapons, but no Fire
Crane at all.
The selected weapon combination will now be attached to the Commander
figure along with a backpack.

(English auto-translation, page 6)
GSG fighter
Each GSG player now also equips his 4 GSG fighters with weapons.
One of them has to carry a laser, another a heavy weapon. The remaining
two can choose between laser or heavy weapon. There are 3 different
heavy weapons:

1) The Zero Time Cannon
An effective weapon against scattered groups of weaker Robotlings or against
individual stronger opponents: it slows the subjective time vector of those hit so
that they appear practically motionless to their surroundings.

2) The holo launcher
A good weapon against dense groups or strong individual Robotlings: It
surrounds those hit with an absolutely lifelike holographic image of their previous
environment, against which they now fight ineffectively until their circuits are
completely exhausted.

3) The Black Hole Blaster
An extremely effective weapon against all types of robotlings, best used in
the corridors: it fires a spatially limited black hole that sucks in those who are
hit and releases them again in a strange parallel world.
The chosen weapons are attached to the GSG fighters, together with a
backpack each. Then each commander and his fighters are placed on his
docking board.
The GSG players are now ready to play.

As others have suggested, I see that Robotlings are the general name for the enemy units, and Chaos player is the name for the Alien player. Gretchens are called Gridlings and Genestealers are called Clones. The term Space Marine becomes a Fighter. GSG Tiger... (the "red" team?). Guessing yellow is Musketeers and that leaves blue as GSG-19. Right? The subtitle of Star Quest is "the Decisive Battle" instead of Space Crusade's subtitle "the Ultimate Encounter." Mission: Dreadnought's subtitle is "Raid on Blotham IV." The latter mission pack has Fusion Cannon, Degressor (meaning stepping or downward movement), and the Time-Twister. I'd love to see the Eldar Attack and Dreadnought german books to translate.

Does anyone have the German mission book (einsatzbuch) ? I'd love to see it, possibly translate it, if it hasn't already been...

If so, please send me a message. I'm most curious to see any story changes and details for the expansions too.

Thanks to some helpful german fans, I was able to get my hands on some of the texts to compare!

From the Einsatzbuch (Deployment book) pages 1-3... italics are the original German, below are the english translations:
Original:

Viele Sternenschiffe, verschwanden damals ohne jeden ersichtlichen Grund.
Um manchmal, nach Jahrhunderten und Lichtjahre vom Ort ihres geheimnisvollen
Eintaucherns entfernt, urplötzlich wieder in unseren Dimensionen aufzutauchen.

English:
The Galactic Empire

Many hundreds of years have passed since a man first set foot in the untouched dust of the moon. How great were the hopes for a rapid conquest of space at that time! But only the ingenious invention of the space curvature [Warp] drive made the colonization of distant worlds possible. Because now you could cover distances in a few days, for which you would have needed centuries or even millennia with normal rockets.

The Curvature of Space [Warp]

Einstein had already predicted it and toyed with the idea of connecting distant points in our universe through neighboring parallel spaces. Nevertheless, it was a shock for humanity when these theories were now confirmed.

They were gruesome worlds that opened up to the first daring conquerors: filled with antimatter and vagabonding neutron stars, shredded by magnetic storms and energy showers, distorted by time jumps and imploding masses.

Many starships disappeared at that time for no apparent reason. To sometimes, after centuries and light years from the place of their mysterious Diving away, suddenly reappearing in our dimensions.

Original:

English:
The Dark Ages

During the period of great colonization, humanity set itself more and more goals. Many distant galaxies have been explored, and new, wonderful discoveries have been made.

It could have been a happy time. If it hadn't been for reports of gruesome machine monsters dominating the curvature of space [Warp] and relentlessly cracking down on all space travelers traversing their world of chaos.

When these Robotlings finally even penetrated our worlds and invaded defenseless colonies, all human colonies joined together to form the Great Galactic Empire and founded the Galaxy Safe Guard, an elite force that should guarantee the protection of human rights throughout space.

Original:

English:
The Galaxy Safe Guard

The Galaxy Safe Guard -- GSG for short -- is a highly trained and state-of-the-art combat force. Each GSG group has its own spaceship and can operate completely independently. It carries all the necessary supply and control equipment and is available in a few hours at any required location thanks to hyperspace drive.

The most famous GSG group is the legendary GSG 19, which has already inscribed itself in the book of history in many places of our universe through heroic deeds. Hardly less successful are two groups that made a name for themselves as GSG "Tiger" and GSG "Musketeers", especially in recent times through unconditional commitment.

If anyone has any corrections for me, please feel free to share. I familiar with the "Warp" thing referring to the curvature of space. :chaoswarrior:

I see there are other interesting choices in other editions too. The Italian version retains the names of the other weapons (Plasma Rifle, Rocket Launcher, Assault Cannon), but refers to the Bolter as a "Laser Rifle."

Also Imperial Fists are known as Steel Fist

The Power Glove and Power Sword are known as the Deadly Glove and Deadly Sword.

The Power Axe is called the Deadly Axe which is paired with a "Pestola Laser" (Laser pistol?).
And the Heavy Bolter is now simply a "Bolter."

Gene Stealer is called "Genetic Thief."

I'm also curious about unique things in the PC game. So we've already talked a bit about two armed Soul Suckers (replacing gene stealers) but I also here about "Vilous parasites" and "Space Ogres" In "The Voyage Beyond" 22 mission expansion set.
