Is there a chance anybody has recreated the original map in a format usable for printing?

Not ready-to-go. I have a version of the map in the link in my signature, but it is the whole map in one image. To print, it would need to be broken up into smaller pieces.

Awesome. I need to check that later on. Is this a an own take to recreate the original map or a "real" prototype?

I scanned in the map in many chunks, then pieced it together and redrew the hexagons. Someone on this forum helped clean it up. (I can't remember who, but if the member that helped is reading this, please chime in so you get credit.) It's not perfect, but it is pretty good considering the size of the map. I initially made it to 1) have a digital backup; and 2) I wanted to make a smaller desktop version and I was going to use the original map. However, I have been doing school and work for almost 10 years now and that project (like many others) fell by the wayside while this has been going on.

Is that a prototype for a new edition, or a prototype for the original game from way back when?

Stephen said it was designed as roughly a 6 inch figure. That's about twice the size of the Mighty Ogre, which in turn is about twice the size of a standard figure. Whoa boy! Only the tower would overshadow him, and not by a lot.
