The locking system is ingenious. I hope you make time to patent it.

Ok well following the wise Ye Olde Inn sages's advice, ive applied for "design rights" to the tile design, its like a watered down patent which takes 1 month to grant and allows you to protect it as your IP.

Just need to block in the inverted corner piece and then its onto the sculpting stage :D may also change the rock texture on the tiles too, as at this tile size a single slab of stone that large doesnt look quite right.

Smart move on the design rights...definitely worth the effort.

Coming along very nicely!!! I'm not interested in the walls for the reasons I described earlier in this thread, however they do look very nicely done.

The spacing between the tiles looks spot on.

I agree that that particular surface texture on the tiles doesn't look right and could do with changing, the textured craters are too deep. The stone should look smoother (not too smooth, just smoother), it currently looks more like muddy ground rather than cut stone fitted together. I'd also consider having some tiles without cracks...cracks look cool but if ALL the tiles have cracks, it looks over-done. Cracks add character to a tile, but if all the tiles have cracks then you lose the characterful effect to a large degree because there are no "normal" tiles compare them to.

Also, each tile has cracks that travel the entire breadth of the tile. They don’t all need this...a crack doesn't need to travel from edge to edge to add character and look cool.

Very nicely done, Thantos, first of all.
Yet I agree with everything the Orbs are saying there.
This is coming along nicely.

Did redo the tile design to make the scale of the rock stones more realistic. But only done 2 of the 6 tile types so far.
Image

What i really want is enough designs and ways to orient the tiles so that your eye never sees any repeating patterns unless you really look hard for them :)
Plus will do some wall decorations, extra bricks and rocks etc in resin so these can be attached to the walls or floors to create even more random arrangements.

Just got 8 more weeks or so to finish off the TC kickstarter, we hitting it hard which is taking up all my time at the moment. Tiles will probably be finished off around Christmas time

looks good mate. i had a similar scenario recently whilst trying my hand at some 2d art work for dungeon tiles. i found the key was to keep them generic enough so that no feature or details spring out too much.
Image

now of course ive got a bit more slack in what i do. but remember once these are painted up. that will also vary them a bit too.
this one is literally 2 tiles all rotated. and repeated (tester of a warhammer quest tile)
Image

i think going for a modular look you have to avoid totally in doing anything that pops or stands out really. as whilst what ive done here isnt exactly the same as your tiles. the same sort of problems kick up from it.
that being said..got any actual tiles planned? i mean it would be nice to kick out some full rooms with cool carvings and details right? :p

Thanks for the update and pic mate, much appreciated. I'm loving the idea of hard plastic 30mm tiles so much!!!

The surface texture on this latest version looks much better than the previous version, for sure, great work!!! I much prefer the look of the previous version though in regards to the amount of gaps in the flagstones. The previous version had each flagstone as a single piece of stone, which I think is a much better way to go. The reason I say this is because I have found that if each tile is made up of several smaller flagstones, once they are all together, it becomes more difficult to delineate between spaces on the board...and when you are playing a game that relies heavily on counting spaces and moving miniatures within spaces, this is important. I like the texture on the newer version but the single-flagstone look of the previous version.

I understand what you are saying about the repeated patterns. My current set of tiles (a pic of a room below) are resin casts from Hirsts Arts and they have 6 versions of tile too. You can see, when you look for it, the repeated patterns, and I took reasonable care to rotate tiles so that it wasn't too obvious. Having said that though, you don't really notice unless you go looking for it.

One thing I would suggest, which I thought of when I was putting all these Hirsts Arts tiles together, was that I wished that there was a tile with zero cracks in it. It occurred to me that if you have too many cracks it looks a bit weird...and it also occurred to me that if you actually did walk through a fantasy dungeon, not all flagstones would have cracks in them...so out of your 6 tiles, I would like to suggest that you make one, or possibly even two of them without any cracks at all. Having un-cracked tiles also serves to break up any patterns in the flooring.
