HQ25 - The great TO-DO list

Brainstorming topics for the HeroQuest 25th Anniversary Quest Pack.

@ Orcs
If you want to continue please make a new thread. The topic is very interesting, but not so much in regard to HQ25.
HQ's monsters are evil because they are evil, as is the tradition in HQ.

@ Jafazo
Cultists:
Feel free to use cultists in your games. The whole point is that you'll continue to use the components after you've played the campaign. |_P

Swamp:
Actually I looked at a whole lot of swamp pictures. Even murky water reflects.
I considered adding those tiny green plants that sometimes covers an entire pond/swamp (too lazy to look up the English name), but I thought it would make the picture too noisy.
Hopefully I'll get it done this weekend.

Also, for your enjoyment, a personal favorite of mine:

I suggest you don't slap me back so glibly. Highly upset with that post.

Really sorry about upsetting you. This comment goes to the proposed story arc for HQ25, so is relevant for this thread (try to conclude with this post). Some (many?) see the evil monster thing as black and white. I do think the monster / NPC perspective you are pushing adds a profound level of realism and is very cool. My suggestion is that it does not fit here in what appears to be a traditional fantasy setting. As a person not actively working on this amazing product, I want to add value with my comments not hurt anyone's feelings. You guys are all doing a great job and this thread is fun to read!!!

I'll keep waiting for Cynthialee's permission to use'em

Google 'Fantasy Marshland' and you'll get a better idea of what I'm talking about. To hell with 'real life' swamps, it's a game.

If for some reason that search still leaves you wondering, I'm talking about Muddy, dirt filled water. Dirty water that isn't clean, with a small degree of algae atop it, yes.

The drawing is quite lovely. I would definitely go swimming in there, maybe even bring a floaty.
Unless you specify your version I'm going by the US rules.

The Cultists were not mine. I just weighed in on them and gave my opinions.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Sorry about the bitchfest.

I only see the Chaos Warriors, the Chaos Mages, Undead and Fimir as intrinsically 'evil'. The rest of the bad guys just happen to be the sorry saps that got drafted into a war they probably have no understanding of.

LoL

Ty for the response. I won't bother to hunt down whoever came up with the cultist idea then but thanks. If it was King, then thank you too. Anyhow, I kind of do agree with your lineup of baddies. This questbook idea's gonna be neat once completed.

Escher! Love him, too. This is one of his more subtle works, but great nonetheless.

knightkrawler wrote:For kobold miniatures - and that's where designe should derive from - there are two main sources:
1. more lizard-like appearance of D&D miniatures, collectible and from the boardgames
2. more dog-like (but also scaly, I think) appearance of Reaper miniatures, available as metal and Bones.
Even the dog-like appearance is only shape, I think they are supposed to be lizardishly scaly anyway.

I agree with these sources. I suggest we make a mashup of the two. Mainly because that way both models can be used for the game, and you aren't simply copying copyrighted material. (not that that would be too much of a problem for a fanmade quest pack with self-made art).

Made a brief sketch of how I envision a "real" kobold, according to traditional German folklore.
Kobold.jpg

May also have a goatie.
I have heard of kobolds often since childhood time, long before I encountered fantasy as a genre.

Ha! That's what I always thought they looked like, until I saw the D&D and Reaper models, and read some D&D books. Kobolds were never lizardlike in Dutch.
The Dutch HQ actually names the Goblins as Kobolden. That's incorrect though, because the Dutch translation of Toliens books refers to goblins as "aardmannen". But "aardman" kind of also reminds me of Bene's sketch :P
